Maps-perfect travel music for Iceland?
I've been trying to post about some of the bands i have been listening to a lot recently-at least one a day, so here is your first dosage of new music before the weekend. Maps could best be described as an incredibly intricate, delicate sound of overlapping lullabys and melodies evading you with mysterious lyrics that leave you haunted. Blown away by the information about how this sound has been achieved by one person-James Chapman-in his basement-on an old 16-track recorder i immediately returned for a serious listening session. James thrives with a particular brand of creative energy comparable to Björk or Thom Yorke and attracted the attention of producer Valgeir Sigurdsson (well known for his work with Bonnie Prince Billy, Sigur Rós, Björk and Múm). "The result is nothing short of essential. It’s a hugely ambitious, widescreen epic that recalls everything from the far away electronics of Basic Channel and Carl Craig, through the skewed songwriting of Postal Service, Flaming Lips and Grandaddy to the euphoric sound-scapes of Sigur Rós and My Bloody Valentine." -Indie London I was excited to learn that James will be stopping by the Luna Lounge in September for a show and i expect more nYc dates to pop up as well. I will definitely share the news as it comes along. The album, 'We Can Create' came out on Merge records in June.

White Stripes take over Canada

Jack wasn't kidding...give him a place to play and he and Meg will make something out of it. I couldn't help but think of the lyrics to 'Rag and Bone' as i was 'starting' my work day (Ahem...checking on music news and seeing what my lovely bands are up to...) and reading news of the latest flash White Stripes secret show. "Keep going, we're not tired. Got plenty of places to go, lots of homes we ain't been to yet. West side, southwest side, middle-east, rich house, dog house, outhouse, old folks house, house for unwed mothers, halfway homes, catacombs, twilight zones. Looking for techniques, turntables to gramophones." My favorite of their shows has to be the daycare center show because of this quote alone, "I was very nervous," said eight-year-old Dylan. "I'll tell my brother I sang in a rock band and there was a band in the YMCA and that's all." Enjoy the videos...they aren't the best of quality but they can't help but make you smile.

The Video Nasties are a highly recommended listen to anyone who likes The Maccabees, for they sound scarily alike. There are a five piece band based out of London with no apparent US contacts thus far according to their myspace page. James is the main vocalist, plays guitar and is brothers with Max who slams on the drums. Meanwhile Harry plays guitar and Joseph tests out the bass. A bit of a boring description but together these five friends have been playing together ever since they were all introduced during a rowdy night out in North London. With a combined age of 18 and armed with only a EP it will be interesting to see where they go from here and if they ever make it stateside. For now i enjoy their brand of brash London schoolboy charm laced with gritty guitars and cheeky lyrics. They are pure British pop fun and would easily fit into any night out on the dancefloor while the summer is still warming up.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs release select Tour Dates

While everyone was stuffing themselves silly with BBQ and beverages yesterday news of a mini upcoming Yeah Yeah Yeahs tour rapidly spread throughout hipster gatherings across nYc. Mark August 7th on your calendars for their engagement at Webster Hall. Until ticket details and more dates are announced you can count down the days until EP release on July 24th.

Jamie T announces Union Pool Date

I found it particularly funny that i had just used a line from a Jamie T song ('If You Got The Money') to headline a posting about Daft Punk and then i find out that he will soon be playing Brooklyn's own Union Pool on July 17th. Tickets are already on sale. I highly recommend visiting his website, like Lily who listed him as a one of her top myspace friends Jamie links to some of his friends who happen to be some of my favorite bands right now. Always a good idea to check out who Artists that you like respect and recommend...
