Heaps of White Stripes News!

Lately this blog has been a little sparse with the news updates...most of which have been centered around the White Stripes. Things have been a bit hectic even though it is summer and this is when things should slow down...right? Apparently not! Anyways...today is exactly a week before the release of 'Icky Thump.' Posters promoting the new album have been shellaced all around the city in preparation making my walks to work highly enjoyable. Then i check in with their website and see this glorious news!

Hello Children,
We have lots of very exciting news for you today. Can’t wait to hear Icky Thump? Well the wait is over, you can hear a stream of the album in it’s entirety starting tomorrow, June 12th, until June 19th by visiting MTV's site. If you live in the UK, don’t forget to pick up the 3 formats of the “Icky Thump” single that were released in stores today (this includes the white etched 7” that is the companion to the red “Rag and Bone” 7” that was released for free on the cover of NME last week).

Heard the stream, now buy the album! The White Stripes web store is now accepting pre-orders for Icky Thump in CD and LP format. For a limited time, orders for the CD will include a free set of 3 button badges. The LP is double vinyl in a gatefold sleeve and is pressed on 180 Gram vinyl and for a limited time will come with a custom peppermint turntable slip mat.

But wait...there's more. We also have a very limited-edition pressing of the “Icky Thump” single on 12-inch 180 gram vinyl with an etching on the B-side. Only 300 were pressed. Limit one per order.

And lastly, Icky Thump is also available in a new format: Jack and Meg USB drives. Custom created for The White Stripes, each 512-megabyte drive contains a copy of their new album in the Apple Lossless Format. There were only 3,333 of each drive created. Visit The White Stripes web store.

Yeah....HIGHLY exciting. Definitely streaming once John in the Morning is done his stellar tuesday morning set.
via NME:
"The White Stripes have been crowned with the accolade of White Stripes Wednesday by BBC Radio 1 this week (June 13). The celebration of all things White Stripes will culminate in two special performances by the band with both DJs Jo Whiley and Zane Lowe at the legendary BBC studios, Maida Vale. Jo Whiley will kick things off between at 10am, as the band perform an exclusive stripped down session as part of Radio 1's Live Lounge. Following this they'll be more live music from the band in Edith Bowman's show from 1pm. Zane Lowe will continue White Stripes Wednesday as the band perform a gig at the historic Maida Vale studio, which will be broadcast live during Zane's show from 7PM. During the sessions, The White Stripes will be previewing tracks from their new album 'Icky Thump', as well as a selection of their best known work. Jo Whiley will finally bring the day to a close with In Live Music We Trust White Stripes Special, where an hour of Radio 1 archive moments will be celebrated, including their first ever live broadcast on UK radio on the John Peel Show, performances from Radio 1's Big Weekend in 2003, and their much-loved gig at Peel Acres in 2001."

White Stripes return to the stage- Nashville, TN

Friday night some very lucky White Stripes fans were lucky enough to see the duo's first live show since 2005. If Jaime and i could have-we would have been there. Luckily we have reports via NME.

"The White Stripes made their live return last night (May 18) at The Cannery Ballroom in Jack White's new hometown of Nashville, Tennessee. Announced less than 48 hours prior, the pre-tour show sold out in less than five minutes with fans ecstatic to see the duo perform for the first time since December 2005 - and the first time in Nashville since 2001. Without an introduction, The White Stripes quietly took the stage and quickly began with a cover of Hank Williams Sr's 'Tennessee Border', a fact not lost on the Tennessee crowd, who hooped and hollered their approval. As usual the entire stage was done up in red, white and black, a theme that went so far as to include the stage hands who wore black fedoras with red feathers - and even the lighting woman, who had dyed her hair red.

Meg White wore a black and white polka dot dress with a red and white polka dot scarf while Jack wore a plain black t-shirt with red trousers and had cut his hair in a way that recalled his looks on the cover of second album 'De Stijl', possibly in an homage to the band's tenth anniversary.

Before launching into the title track for their forthcoming album 'Icky Thump', Jack asked the crowd "How's my new hometown doing?" to an overwhelming response, but after that the duo got down to business, pounding their way through a set cherry picked from their five album back catalogue, as well as a few covers, including a crowd pleasing version of Dolly Parton's 'Jolene'. The band did showcase several new songs from the forthcoming 'Icky Thump' including the acoustic, country-leaning 'Effect And Cause' and the downbeat story song 'I'A a Martyr For My Love For You'. However the band had to struggle through some sound issues and an increasingly chatty crowd, which even saw the duo cut one new song, 'I'm Slowly Turning Into You', off after just one verse. After ending the set with 'Wasting My Time', a smiling Jack returned to the stage for the encore armed with a Polaroid camera which he pointed at Meg and then the crowd before launching into a headbanging version of 'Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground'.

The frontman then told the crowd, "We've heard from Hank and we've heard from Dolly", before adding "there's one more" the pair needed to cover in order to complete the Tennessee song cycle. They then launched into Loretta Lynn's Rated X', featuring Meg handling some off-key vocals, to the delight of the crowd. After that Jack announced "Now we've blessed our first show in Tennessee" before ending the show with a raucous version of 'Seven Nation Army'."

The White Stripes played:

'Tennessee Border'
'When I Hear My Name'
'Black Math'
'Do'
'Cause And Effect'
'Jolene'
'Death Letter/Motherless Children'
'Hotel Yorba'
'I'm A Martyr For My Love For You'
'Cannon/John The Revelator'
'Ball And Biscuit'
'I'm Slowly Turning Into You'
'We're Going To Be Friends'
'Apple Blossom'
'Wasting My Time'
'Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground'
'Rated X'
'Seven Nation Army'

***REview from Tremble Under Boom Lights
My fave bit: "But Meg was the biggest surprise...usually when they're jamming on some spontaneous riff she can be found to take most of her cues from Jack. But at this show Meg was running with it...throwing in accents and tempo changes in these off-the-cuff jams that occasionally turn into something. This development will be huge. Once they've been on the road for a bit and fully regained their sea legs, the White Stripes live show will easily be at its most ferocious ever." AHhh! so excited for July 24th!!!*******

New White Stripes Material

It is always a pleasure to report news from The White Stripes camp, particularly when it pertains to new material! Due to tour date cancellations that left them with a few months of *free time* they ran right back to the studio and wrote three new songs and a video for another song off of their latest album Icky Thump. The official news, posted via their myspace page and website yesterday Jack and Meg announced, "The White Stripes have just filmed an exciting new video and recorded three never before heard original songs."

And I'm Slowly Turning Into You

Yes-yes, i know BV posted this photo too, but it is fantastic
White Stripes seems to be my theme band for 2007. At least since for the summer. Friends have commented on how my blog seems to have turned into 'ShelvesofWhiteStripes' and just recently this weekend i got into an argument with one of my friends over who was a better drummer, Meg or Kim from Matt and Kim. Obviously you all know who i chose. How is it even a competition?! It turned into such a discussion that the argument dissipated into me stating, 'It IS theWhite Stripes! I can't argue, they are the best!' Because, well...they are. Whether it is their song writing; their classic rock and roll sound; their incredibly awe inspiring live shows or their artistic aloofness they have completely cast me under their spell. A day does not go by where i don't click my way through iTunes to listen to a track or mentally compare a band to them. I am pretty sure i could go to see them perform everyday and always be struck with amazement at how good they are. It was a bit sad to see them last night at Madison Square Garden only because their Irving Plaza show was so overwhelming. I enjoyed last night's set immensely but was saddened that 'Rag n Bone' and 'St. Andrew' off of their latest album 'Icky Thump' weren't performed since they are highly enjoyable live. The audience seemed to come alive when a red or white light struck the disco ball and MSG was turned into the scene of an underwater red and white bubble fest. (at least that is what the overall effect was for me.) They were still the same old Jack and Meg, just on a larger scale. I am happy to see such a large audience love them just as much as a small room packed with intense fans. They are a band for the American Music Community to be proud of.

Dear Jack & Meg, Please return to nYc sometime soon-Cheers-Shelvesofvinyl

White Stripes out of Austin?

Jaime and almost every single one of my beloved concert buddies have been planning their collective exodus down to Austin for the last few months. I sincerely hope from the bottom of my heart this is not true! (As i was drafting this it was indeed confirmed...White Stripes are out of their Austin City Limits scheduled performances due to illness.) Ghostland Observatory will be replacing their original set time. (You can thank Jaime for the ACL updates.)

Pfork chats with Jack White

Pitchfork:
With the song "Icky Thump" there's a political angle too, as it touches on the immigration debate.
White: "It seems like a timeless sort of thing to me. It's something that's been happening in America for a long time. There's this timeless ridiculousness about one group of people excluding another group of people. It's almost like a children's playground feeling, this "you can't play with us"/"you can't go on that swing set" kind of thing. That kind of notion is just ridiculous for adults to still be thinking like that, trying to find a way to justify those exact same notions."
Piddlefork then goes on to compare the White Stripes music to pop music basically...
White: Plus when people mix pop and politics it can so easily fall flat on its face, can't it?
White: Yeah, that or it can start a riot. One or the other."
Comparing the White Stripes to pop makes me want to riot! But it is a pretty good interview otherwise.

You've got us in your pocket-and there's no way out now

*Cred
"You work for a record label? We all work for a record label! You work for SPIN magazine? We all work for SPIN magazine? You live in New York City? We all live in New York City!" And thank god for that. Jack White and his big sister Meg visited New York and played Irving Plaza last night, June 19th at approximately 10:50. There was electricity in the air. Candy canes for sale. Immaculately dressed stagehands in black pants, black t-shirts, and black fedora hats with red feathers. A theaterical opener set the stage as the room buzzed with fans, press, music industry buffs, and random celebrities all straining and fidgeting waiting for the main act to hit the stage. Whispers of which songs would be played, how many copies of the new album people had bought, stories of past White Stripes shows were tossed around as the excitement grew with each passing minute. And then, the entrance- and all was forgotten. Transported immediately to another time and another place, you are exactly where Jack and Meg want you to be, their captives completely, for as long as they desire to play. It was as if you silently said to yourself, 'ah yes...now i remember what this rock n' roll gig is like." Yes-yes, you've fallen in love with Cold War Kids, David Vandervelde, Grizzly Bear and numerous others who have come crawling out of the nooks and cranies of America to represent and test the rock n' roll stage, checking to see if the masses are still interested. And we took the bait, turning out to shows and purchasing albums...enjoying our experience along the way-but it is because of the White Stripes that we stuck it out. Knowing they were still out there. Immediately you respond. You don't know which one to watch- Meg who seems to have grown into her Nashville living-beating her drums with more salt and spirited will than ever before. Or Jack, pacing around the stage as if trapped within an imaginary laso that brings him front and center where he would stop and concentrate on the guitar-staring down the audience as to say, you want to test me? You want to see what i can do?

Icky Thump hit record stores yesterday and live the new material sounds even better. Stripped down versions of 'A Martyr For My Love For You' slowed the lyrics- strangled with the pain of Jack's voice. Slices of 'Rag and Bone' clipped the audience on the chin and stirred the dancing back up into true form. Teasings of 'Little Cream Soda' and flat out debuts of 'Icky Thump' and 'I'm Slowly Turning Into You' sounded so classically positioned and delivered that you hardly remembered that you these songs are still new to you. It was beautiful, it was heartbreaking, it was passionate, it was everything you had been missing. It was The White Stripes. And you loved every single second.

*Stereogum thoughtfully fills us in on other Jack White stories:

"Today I had coffee at the base of Empire State Building. And then I had a latte at Ellis Island. And then I had a cappuccino at the top of some nice, shiny building, I think it was the Chrysler Building. And then I had a funnel cake at Battery Park. And then I had a cigarette on the Staten Island Ferry. I didn't smoke it, I just held it. And then I rode across Central Park. I wrote a song, but I forgot it by the time I got to the other side."

"Anyone here from Yonkers?" (Mix of cheers, boos, laughs) "That's a strange reaction to a question ... I had a friend when I was 12, we went camping and he caught a squirrel with his barehands in the broad day light. We sat in the tent, it was a lot like prison, just talking, and he started telling me stories. Like about his favorite types of lawnmowers, gas vs. electric, about how his parents let his sister take swimming lessons, but he wasn't allowed to take lessons to learn how to operate farm equipment. Which was weird 'cause we lived in southwest Detroit, not like there's much use for farm equipment. It was then that I realized he had brought that squirrel in, that he had captured and killed." (Audience responds) "Yeah, tough question ... you don't know if you should be sad or what. To this day, I don't know how I'd react."

*A bit o history behind the track, 'Black Jack Davey':
"The band also plays many covers of Bob Dylan songs, including "One More Cup of Coffee", "Isis", "Love Sick" and "Outlaw Blues". "Black Jack Davey" was also recorded and released as a B-side; the song is traditional, but has been made popular on Bob Dylan's Good as I've Been to You. Jack White said that Dylan covers are usually suggested by Meg, who is a huge Dylan fan. Jack White also performed "Ball and Biscuit" as an encore with Dylan on March 17, 2004 at Detroit's State Theatre."
-Thank you dearest Bob-O!

White Stripes-Finish Canadian Tour

So they completed what they set out to do-touring every providence in Canada and Rollingstone Magazine nicely provides us with the photos to prove it. Glide Magazine covers the adventures of their friend Dafun during his journey to the Stripe's 700th gig on the last night of their Canadian voyage.
"Glace Bay is located almost as far east as you can go on the island of Cape Breton, the easternmost part of Nova Scotia. The theater for the duo’s 10th Anniversary show held about 700 people and was painted red, white and black. This crowd was out-of-control-excited. The room was filled in ton of relative of Jack’s — I sat direct next to 91-year-old women who was related to Jack’s grandmother. Prior to the show, they brought champagne out to celebrate the occasion. The show began with bagpipers and a drummer leading the band out. From start to finish, as you’d probably expect, the show was amazing, a captivating affair."
Craziness...i would have loved to be at any of their secret engagements! I highly recommend checking out the rest of his report along with lovely video clips.

Have to love Jack White in a kilt!

White Stripes reschedule dates for September and battle 'Icky Thump' leaks

Via their website, Jack and Meg announced that, "Due to unforeseen scheduling issues, The White Stripes have had to push back some of their early September dates. The only dates affected were those between September 4-13 and all but Albuquerque, New Mexico have already been rescheduled. A new dates for Albuquerque will be announced very soon. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused our fans." Meanwhile fans are left to count down the days until June 18th...here comes 'Icky Thump.'

This all following news of a bit of a tustle with a detroit DJ who apparently played selections off of the album without the bands' permission. "Chicago Q101's DJ Electra has posted on Djelectra.blogspot.com about how White personally phoned her up after she played the album on her show. She wrote: "At 2pm today, during my show Q101 became the first station in the world to play the new White Stripes album 'Icky Thump'. "At 4pm today Jack White called Q101's main offices from Spain where they're touring, looking specifically for me, to yell at me for leaking the album and, in part, being 'messed up for the entire (music) business'. I felt like I was going to throw up. Weirdest, most surreal conversation of my life. "Jack asked me to take responsibility for leaking the record, and asked if I was sorry for what I'd done... We tried to explain where we were coming from - someone gave us a copy of a record that we were really excited to play, and the whole experience was an hour-long love-fest for him and his band - but he wasn't having it. He hung up, very, very angry, and I thought I was going to cry."

Only Jack and Meg...

Thank you Canada!
Could pull off walking on stage and playing ONE note. Yes, you heard right, one note-C-sharp to be exact. It was their final day during their creative Canadian tour and they decided to start the day with a single note in St. John's. "Following shows on boats, buses, bridges and classrooms, Jack and Meg White took to the stage on George Street in St. John's and played a single note - reportedly a C-sharp - before announcing they have "now officially played in every province and territory in Canada" and leaving the stage. Hundreds of fans showed up for the last minute event, but were pre-warned that the show would be just one-note long. Later that evening, the band played a full-length set at Mile One Stadium in the city, the final show on their Canadian tour proper."NME

Just 'Rags and Bones'? I think not...

"The White Stripes have scored the Number Two position on the US Billboard chart this week. Their new album, 'Icky Thump', has sold 223,000 copies. This is the highest chart position the band has achieved to date. 2005's 'Get Behind Me Satan' entered the charts at Number Three, while 2002's 'White Blood Cells' topped out at Number 61." Heck yeah. We love.

More White Stripes Dates?!

I love how serious Jack and Meg are about reaching every state and almost every White Stripes fan that they can during their upcoming tour to promote 'Icky Thump.' Most honorable. "This Fall, The White Stripes will continue on their quest to play all remaining sixteen states they have yet to travel to. September takes them to eight more, with a few additional stops along the way. Don't worry Hawaii, Jack and Meg haven’t forgotten about you. Please visit the tour dates section for a complete list of newly confirmed shows and stay tuned for info regarding special pre-sale tickets." (via their website).

*Also, Brandon Flowers, you trying to sound like Jack White, or just wishing you did?
"I am not a hipster and I am not trying to be. I believe there is nothing wrong with writing good songs, and I think that is what has been lost in all of this. People are either trying to be too cool or they are worried about just selling records."
-Brandon Flowers on today's music scene

Jack: "As far as America goes, my whole trip lately has been to get as far away from hipster culture as I can. I don't want to be cool to those kids." (August 2006)

White Stripes take over Canada

Jack wasn't kidding...give him a place to play and he and Meg will make something out of it. I couldn't help but think of the lyrics to 'Rag and Bone' as i was 'starting' my work day (Ahem...checking on music news and seeing what my lovely bands are up to...) and reading news of the latest flash White Stripes secret show. "Keep going, we're not tired. Got plenty of places to go, lots of homes we ain't been to yet. West side, southwest side, middle-east, rich house, dog house, outhouse, old folks house, house for unwed mothers, halfway homes, catacombs, twilight zones. Looking for techniques, turntables to gramophones." My favorite of their shows has to be the daycare center show because of this quote alone, "I was very nervous," said eight-year-old Dylan. "I'll tell my brother I sang in a rock band and there was a band in the YMCA and that's all." Enjoy the videos...they aren't the best of quality but they can't help but make you smile.

Blitzen Trapper/ White Stripes Press

My Old Kentucky Blog posted another selection highlighting the spread of the infectious and talented Blitzen Trapper. If you haven't already i highly suggest you pick up your tickets for their upcoming July 25th Mercury Lounge show sooner rather than later. Of course we are all excited for the release of the latest White Stripes family member tomorrow. Read what NYtimes thought. They are also on the covers of Nylon and Blender magazines. I found the Blender interview to be quite interesting with the perfect ending. "If you would've asked me our first year if we'd make it, I'd have said 'no way.' But we did, so I have to say we'll make it to 20," Jack says. "You've got to read the room you want to play for." And what room is that? Jack doesn't miss a beat. "Planet Earth."
