Band of Horses Live KEXP Broadcast @ CMJ 8 - Cover Tune

This was just incredible...

Sadly skipping NYC...

Maybe they felt we were too spoiled by their various appearances during the month of October but i am still sad to see that Band of Horses will not be playing New York during their upcoming tour. The boys kick off their dates with a three night run at The Earl in Atlanta, Georgia. Cease to Begin is an album I cannot recommend enough, Ben Bridwell comes into his own as both a singer and a songwriter laying down some of the best lyrics of 2007. Check out their live in studio performance at KEXP at Gibson Studios posted below as well.

Decide to walk with me, around the lake tonight

You know you love a band when you are so sad that you are missing them touring that you dream about it. Which is exactly what happened the other night. Jaime and I were at a show and we ran into someone who was going to see the Toadies and we were both so jealous. I hope everyone who goes rocks their socks off for the both of us-which would take a lot. J`slick plays a mean air guitar!
***The Toadies are on Tour***:

12/14 Austin, TX Austin Music Hall
12/15 Grand Prairie, TX Nokia Theater

12/26 Little Rock, AR The Rev Room
12/27 Shreveport, LA The Warehouse

Happy 50th Issue FADER

FADER is celebrating its' 50th issue with a rough, ghostly video of The Strokes shot by Colin Lane in 2001 in the midst of them becoming the darlings of New York. The piece that accompanies these first images of a band that changed music for me in every way is better written than anything i could ever attempt so check the whole bit out here. If you need a tasting to be convinced...
Squabbles and footnotes aside, in the pages of history books and The FADER, New York rock in the 21st century began with the Strokes. Of course the Strokes always evoked New York rock of the 20th Century, but that was kind of the point. The band captured the city’s borrowed nostalgia for a time when young men wore tight jackets and let their hair fall into their faces, then wrote thrilling songs about the dejected glamour such lifestyle decisions would lead to. At the time of their arrival, downtown Manhattan was still stuck in the orange plastic/white vinyl hangover of lounge culture, but the Strokes were a band for dark bars where the bathroom door was always broken and you could sink into a booth and hide out from adulthood for a few more years. They were a great band for New York because no one could agree on them: they were either the best or the worst thing that could have happened. People would tell you they hated them and everything they stood for, then a couple of beers later they’d confide that they’d never actually heard them or that they secretly loved them. They were one more part of the city you could endlessly kvetch about, then take pride in because no other city had anything nearly as good.

Sufjan might be cancelled...

But there are still some killer bands to see tonight to patch your disappointment. Dead Confederate out of Athens, Georgia have been touring non-stop and gaining fans who are eagerly awaiting their upcoming album slated to be released in early 2008. Before you throw the label of a Southern Rock band at them you better hunker down for a listen. Drawing on their admiration for Radiohead, Pink Floyd and Music Hates You they are a band Athens should be proud of for taking a different route with a sound that is remains true to the garage rock and roll they adore. They remain true to their inspiration, creating a full, loud sound without including the cowbell, banjo, tambourine or moonshine. Slide guitar-however, is present. Opening for local band The Head Set you should definitely make a point to get there early to check out one of the most talked about bands from this years' CMJ festivities.

ZooKeepEr

Being out of the city for even a day is such a treat but then you slowly get an itch and realize how much you miss it at the same time. Luckily we have a good week of shows to look forward to. I am most excited to see Zookeeper this Thursday, November 29th at Pianos. I took them along for my drives along the leaf speckled curvy roads surrounding my home town and couldn't shake them from my head. Their lyrics found me as I walked with my pup under the Maryland nighttime November sky illuminated by the full moon. Their album, Becoming All Things sways with the sweet voice of Chris Simpson while a modge-podge of horns, harmonica, piano, and acoustic guitar cushion his pop soaked lyrics. The high points of the album come early on with tracks 'Becoming All Things' and 'Snow in Berlin.' While some tracks fall into the trap of being "too listener friendly" for some indie listener's ears it is the honesty in his voice and simplicity of the soft piano that keep me wanting more. Check them out this week as they slowly make their journey up north.

Ticket F'in Sneaky Snake Shit Master

Anyone notice anything odd about their Cut Chemist and DJ Shadow ticket when it came in the mail? You are not alone. How does a ticket that was advertised as $31.00 dollars come out to be $51.60? Jaime did the ground work to investigate what is really going on. "So I called ticketbastard to discuss why my ticket was $36.00 and (another friend of ours) was $31.00. When I told them the event they said tickets are $31.00. I then asked how come ticketmaster.com says $36.00 and I do not have an option for the $31.00 Price Level? They put me on hold and said the tickets which were $31 were student tickets. I then said say I bought a ticket from you, how would you verify I was a student and not a regular person not in school?! He suggested I bring this up with their customer service department. Pretty f'n dumb if ya ask me." Here-here Jaime! Well said. Unfortunately as well all know this is how ticketf'er rolls...

I felt you in my life before I even thought to

Tegan and Sara. Canadians. Twin sisters. Sold out shows across the country. Writers of the sweetest, love stricken songs you could possibly conjure to confess within the pages of your diary beginning at the age of twelve and on. Last night I was in a bit of a love sick mood myself as I wandered over to Webster Hall to check out what two of my favorite albums, So Jealous and The Con would sound like in such a large space. I had just gotten off the phone from talking with my best friend since the age of seventeen. We have been through every thing together from that awkward first semester at college to your first real heartbreak, to finally admitting we liked each other and dating for a bit. As I listened to him excitedly clue me on his plans to move in with his current girlfriend i felt my heart take one of those squeaking halts where you realize life is moving on-even if you might not be ready for it. Despite my happiness for him and his dearest and this wonderful step I still felt like I was taking another step back from knowing everything about him, which is inevitable when you live in different cities and meet different people. Silly as it sounds, life takes over. Standing in the audience last night listening to Tegan play her guitar and sing those words that touched home so painfully at that moment could not have been more therapeutic. Their songs are short, most of them barely clock at three minutes in length but they are intimately honest and dear to my heart. I discovered Tegan and Sara via Fuse one late night when I first moved to the city. All of the sudden on the screen there were these two identical girls dressed in all white having their hearts cut out and chopped to bits and pieces. The lyrics of Walking With A Ghost were invasive and infectious and the rest was history. The next day I left my little studio to trek out and find more music from this twin sister discovery. Since then they have won over massive female audiences and recently were sponsored by MTV as *Artist of the Week.* Their show was quirky and quickly paced with both Tegan and Sara playing their guitars and sharing stories from their song writing days for their latest album. Enjoying their voices live rather than just crooning from my iPod transformed these two into a magical harmonizing duo. Listening to them chime in at different points during the songs with each of them carrying a slightly different tune they embody the spirit of two singers becoming one right before your eyes. Their albums are the perfect soundtrack for experiences such as harbouring a crush, falling in love, falling out of love and sometimes for happily loving those who are dear to you and always will be...who are moving on.

Finn, Zach, Colin, Aaron and Adam will be showcasing selections off of their debut album, With Me. Hopefully you think about this daily, but just in case you don't and you need a reminder our favorite gluttonous holiday is around the corner. Malajube-Je t'aime.

Last night I finally caught Malajube after missing them at last years CMJ and this summer out in Prospect Park. I was not disappointed even for a second. Smashing into their drum kit and ripping on their guitars this Montreal collective delivers rock n roll en francais. Which I am willing to wager is the only reason that Bowery Ballroom was not packed last night. I was surprised and saddened by the turn out simply because this band deserved an adoring audience. There were a few fans pushed up against the stage dancing to their hearts content but it was not enough to cover up for the lack of energy in the room. Julien still delivered, laying his lyrics down with ferious contempt and conviction. Favorites, Metronome, Fille À Plumes and Montreal -40c were full of spit and vigour with lyrics that Mineau describes as "pretty vague and fucked up. Maybe that’s not the right word – fucked up – but they’re like that. They’re not straight-forward. A song could be about love or it could be about the doctor when he’s performing and operation on you.” If you love loud, rough, catchy music than you will love Malajube- if you can get past the fact that they sing in French. Which works. Perfectly. Hopefully next time around they will receive the affection they deserve. These Montreal boys ROCK.

Oh that Kevin Drew...

I must start off by saying that I sincerely wish Jaime was not so busy at work and could write a more 'proper' review of the Kevin Drew show at Webster Hall last night because A- I do not know much about Broken Social Scene and B- had not really listened to Kevin Drew's solo creation until last night. A friend of mine recently questioned me if i go to shows where I do not know the music and i enthusiastically answered 'yes, of course!' and a reason for that would be experiences like Kevin Drew. With all of the guests lined up and a packed Webster Hall Kevin and his personality were ready to perform. I list these as two separate identities because there is musician Kevin who simply put pastes together his songs and then there is the stand up comedian Kevin who intertwines his life experiences with his music. I love when artists banter because even if it is all an act it shows you a bit more of their personality which if you are into the music as a fan is always enjoyable. Kevin had enough banter to do a stand up performance with rips on text messaging ('people are living their lives on text-their sex lives, their love lives, their work lives...') to asking the audience for various items of clothing so he could perform a song and then handing the items back one by one, embarrassing a fellow member of the band with a story regarding a cheesy pick up line and apologizing for their guitars being a bit out of tune due to Sam's brother/technician/professional snowboarder. Kevin made you feel as if you were just sitting in a living room or barn chillaxin' with him and his crew. His jokes came as easily as his beautifully created songs off of his solo album, Spirit If. Guest appearances by Emily Haines (who attended Etobicoke School of the Arts with Drew and is a member of Broken Social Scene and Metric), Scott Kannberg (Pavement)and James Shaw (Metric) made the night all the more special. J. Mascis (Dinosaur Jr) was scheduled to perform but had to turn around due to a new addition to his family. Everyone on stage melded together into a collaborative fluid melody even though at times it seemed a bit chaotic it always sounded technically tight without losing the fun. It sounds incredibly silly to classify a show as fun but the spirit of the show as all about having fun. It has been awhile since i have seen so many people clearly enjoying playing their music and being with their friends on stage. Drew himself comes across as an urban hippie and has been quoted for his connection with his audience as being one of the most important aspects of his live show. "We want to affect audiences' hearts and minds with honesty."It is easy to understand stories of kisses, hugs and handshakes all being a normal part of the Kevin Drew experience after you see him. His songs are backed up by horns and the overwhelmingly loud and heavy presence of guitar, which for me was the highlight. Although his songs come across as carefree melodies and cheerful expressions the lyrics are insightful while Drew flirts with the dark side of his personality and creativity.

Feral Children

Feral Children are a band based out of Seattle with a self-released album, To The Last Frontier comfortably behind them for 2007. The single, Jaundice Giraffe is quite catchy and shines with Scott Colburns' production skills (Arcade Fire, Animal Collective). Multi-layered with rattling drums and eerie guitar rifs they are a band that should be receiving national attention and hopefully will add some east coast tour dates sometime soon.

Beginning of the good movies season

Last night i finally went to see a movie i have been eagerly awaiting for the past few months. As an avid fan of the incredible brilliance and tenderness that is Nancy Oliver, the writer behind Six Feet Under i knew that Lars and The Real Girl would be something quite special. The story centers around an emotionally troubled Lars Lindstrom, painfully portrayed by the equally talented Ryan Gosling. Human interaction seems to be a daily burden for Lars who leads a life of solitude and monotony with the exception of the company from his pregnant sister in law, Karen (Emily Mortimer) and his brother Gus (Paul Schneider). The on screen contribution of Emily as a protective and worried family member helped push my compassion for Lars to a higher level. Patricia Clarkson also puts in a stellar performance as the family doctor who helps Lars open up and experience the world and the people in his life who surround him with their love and support, accepting Bianca as one of their own. You forget that the presence of a live doll should be funny and awkward and concentrate on Lars' plight towards normalcy and ownership of his feelings. For anyone who has yet to see Gosling on screen he delivers on performance just as strong and poignant as last years' Half Nelson, which I also highly recommend. The movie is tenderly haunting in a way that has Nancy Oliver written all over it.

The Pains of Being Pure At Heart

The Pains of Being Pure of Heart scoping out NYC heartbreak near Tompkins Square Park
The Pains of Being Pure of Heart are the newest New York city based band to attract my attention as of late. I must say i went with them straight away based on their drawn out heartfelt selection for a band name. Works every time! Lucky for them they have the talent and lyrics to back it up. The threesome have only a five song EP to share with you released on Cloudberry Records.

With it being technically the weekend already if you are in say- London or Paris i am already hitting up the electronic beats. edIT are one of my favorite discoveries of the week. Edward Ma, otherwise known as edIT is a product of Los Angeles and has been DJing all over the traffic ridden/club infested city for years under the name 'The Con-Artist.' Having just released his first album as edIT, 'Crying Over Pros For No Reason' has transported him as a local artist to a broader scene...specifically ours! Lacking in all things of the hip hop nature i am not the best person to further describe his history our sound, but i welcome you to check him out!

HoLy F*uck!

Sometimes i need to be pushed to listen to something, hence the case with Holy Fuck and when i finally give in it is usually a good thing. After previously passing over the latest Canadian export Holy Fuck and their debut album "LP" it was their track 'Lovely Allen' that made me a lover. Hailing from Toronto the story goes that band members, Brian Borcherdt, Graham Walsh, Matt McQuade, Loel Campbell, Matt Schulz, Mike Bigelow, Glenn Milchem and Kevin Lynn constructed their multi-layered, chaotic, stumbling dance music through live shows and performances before moving into a studio. During this journey they added sounds found in random every day objects, lo-tech battery operated keyboards, and children's toys. The result is a sound that impressed fellow countrymen Wolf Parade enough to invite them to open a few dates for them. Spots at Coachella, Glastonbury, SXSW, and Montreal Jazz Festival introduced them to the rest of the world. Electronic music has made a huge impact on my music library this year which has been most enjoyable and an exciting journey. Maybe it is because at various points throughout my day there is nothing better than hearing something that makes you smile or dance, especially when you are stuck in the land of contracts. Lack of creativity is what pushed me into starting this little blog, so hey sometimes a little brute force is necessary. So go ahead- push your friends...

New White Stripes Material

It is always a pleasure to report news from The White Stripes camp, particularly when it pertains to new material! Due to tour date cancellations that left them with a few months of *free time* they ran right back to the studio and wrote three new songs and a video for another song off of their latest album Icky Thump. The official news, posted via their myspace page and website yesterday Jack and Meg announced, "The White Stripes have just filmed an exciting new video and recorded three never before heard original songs."

Jens Lekman on KEXP today

Most artists that I do not like off the album usually change my mind during a live performance, which I always consider to be a good thing. Better than having a band fall apart live and ruin your opinion of them, right? Everyone seems to be loving Jens Lekman, including Jaime- yet I have yet to spend enough time with his albums to feel the effect. He will be gracing KEXP with a set this afternoon at 12:40 PM (EST). After my first few listens of his new album it reminded me of a squeaky clean version of Adam Green, which again makes me wonder why America has yet to embrace him?!

Sea Wolf Tonight at The Mercury Lounge

Tickets are still available for tonight's Sea Wolf show at the Mercury Lounge. One of the most prolific singer/songwriters on the scene today. If you needed a little bit more insight to Alex's background and adventures SPIN Magazine can helpfully provide you with just that,
"Alex Brown Church had quite the childhood, spending time in a gold rush California town and in Europe. "When I was 7 or 8, I can't remember now cause it was so long ago, my parents and I moved to France and lived in a tent on the edge of a forest," Church tells SPIN.com. "I also remember it was near a corn field. Anyway, we lived in this tent for over a year while my mother and nine other women built some structure or building for charity reasons. That's something I don't know if I've ever told anybody!"

Weird/Cute?

My co-worker just imed this to me and i not sure how i feel about it...let's just say this city continues to surprise me with its weird dating rituals. I guess it is better than hitting on a girl by asking what she dressed up as for Halloween and then saying she shouldn't have gone as a zombie because, 'come on baby, that isn't sexy.' Too good not to share, right?

Feist - I Feel It All-SNL

And my personal favorite.

Feist 1*2*3*4*-on SNL

I tend to be a bit of a homebody- especially on cold nights when it seems like a good idea to tuck in and watch SNL. Yes yes, it has had its dips over the last few years but i loyally stand behind one of my favorite programs on television. Especially when it hosts musical talent Feist. 2007 has seen many artists gain the recognition they highly deserve-which has been a long time coming for this lady. By now all of you have had this song programmed into your head thanks to the clever marketing staff over at HBO and Apple. I always find it to be a bit hard to master a good live performance on SNL due to nerves and atmosphere combined but again, she pulls it off. Did we really expect anything less?

Halloweenhead @ Hammerstein

Jaime loved it-MusicSlut did NOT
I am a bit biased because I am still in the honeymoon stages when it comes to Ryan Adams. After many years of refusing to listen to his music or see his shows due to the horrific stories of his raw exhibitions of alcoholism and debauchery or just plan stubbornness I finally gave in when Jaime dragged me to a show. Ever since he has grown on me to the point where I was sad to have missed last nights' show at Hammerstein due to my previous commitment to going to see the Black Crowes with Patti Smith. The ever loyal Jaime went and reports back with exclamations of a killer show with a stellar set list:
