Woah spark*ly Pants!

Hey JOrtzzzstarrr* you NEED those shorts...
Man that M.I.A.'s knows how to gain attention, first with our government and now with her Flash*y pants! Much buzz has been surrounding her latest effort with leaks and snips of the music stripped from various music blogs almost instantaneously. Her show in Los Angeles didn't recieve the warmest reviews, however, i for one think she looks fantastic. So fantastic that i demanded JOrtzzzstarrr* check it out-for if anyone can pull off this ensemble it would be her. Oh and forgetting for a second that i am not a fashionista and this is a music blog you should go procure yourself the new album here for its' August 21st release date. Excited to check her out this weekend during Lollapalooza!

Help out the Maccabees on their next video

So the diehard romantic in me had to post this on behalf of the Maccabees. A. Because i LOVE all of their videos, so cute and clever and B. because ever since i went to see Broken English this weekend i cannot stop day dreaming about Paris and other romantic notions. Seemingly it was as if these boys knew! Check out their myspacey message:

Do you know a couple that have been together for 40 years or more and have kept many photographs of their time together? We are looking for just such a couple to participate in the video for our next single 'Toothpaste Kisses'. They would need to be willing to let us use their photographs in the video. Any couple interested in participating should E-mail their contact details to info@jprmanagement.co.uk before the end of the week, and we'll get in touch with them.
Thanks for your help

The new White Stripes video. I do. Whereas it is not action packed it is incredibly beautiful. I am wondering if it was filmed during their time in Canada...kinda looks like Nova Scotia a bit. I appreciate how the director pays special attention to the chemistry between these two with all the close up shots of Meg as she gives Jack her best coy smile. My version is a but fuzzy so i invite you to check out Brooklynvegan for a better version if you would like.

Oh, you are my family tree...be good to me

Anyone need a Nascar Toothbrush? Anyone? Anyone!
'Sha Sha' day at Southpaw goes something like this: exuberant fans, red toothbrush give aways, commemorative songbooks, and one grinning Ben Kweller. His fans showed up early, crammed into the steamy venue during a hot July summer night. Celebrating the album that started it all for the rocker orginially from Texas. As Ben strolled onto stage, making his enterance to the Violent Femmes, 'Blister in the Sun' a huge smile spread across his face greeting us in the same hat and long sleeved polka dotted shirt that he wore in the photograph and used as his album artwork. (He lost the black t-shirt apparently). It was stories like this that were the extra treat beyond hearing one of my favorite albums all the way through. He gently explained to us that during all of his other shows and tours he tries to build a certain momentum that is different than the album, so that this was a bit odd for him to be performing 'Sha Sha' and 'Wasted & Ready' back to back. He explained the story behind 'Commerce, TX' and the lyrics: "i got a strange neighbor who doesn't have curtains on her windows" and how it wasn't a sexy story as people had guessed but really a crazy old lady neighbor who covered her windows in paper bags.

The stories were endearing and better than thank-you liner notes. It was as if the whole room was sitting down with him asking, 'what were you thinking when you wrote this song'...'what were you listening to'...real questions fans want to ask and have answered. Dedicating the song, 'Lizzy' to 'grey shirt', or more formally known as his wife made the set feel even more personalized. Listening to everyone singing along-honest happy fans of his music-i never wanted the set to end. A bit of insight came to me as i was listening to the albums' progression live how much this album reminds me of early Weezer in an incredibly grand way. It also made me very excited for tonights' show. 'On My Way' is my favorite Ben Kweller album and i am crossing my fingers very tightly that him and Adam join forces for an encore of Kokomo!
*Set List: well...go check out the album if you don't know it!!*

TV on The Radio @ McCarren

check out more photos and another review!
Oh what a week! Bat For Lashes on Monday, White Stripes on Tuesday, David Vandervelde on Wednesday, & Sonic Youth on Saturday. One would think at this point I would have had my fill of live music.....but oh no, Sunday was Tv On The Radio playing a free show at McCarren Park and Pool and I was not missing it! If I recall correctly, last year this band put one of the top 3 albums of 2006 (if not the best album of 2006). The day, which seemed to be on everyone's calendar, seemed no longer to be a top priorty once the weather appeared to be pretty nasty. With the dropping of people attending the show, I still managed to find 3 friends down for the show and what do you know, it didn't even rain! The only thing people were covered in was sweat from the heat and the blistering sounds of Tv On The Radio! Once the band hit the stage at about 6:00 PM sharp the flood of people made their way to the front and the pool was pretty crowded yet comfortable. The band opened with "Wash The Day" which is what everyone was pretty much feeling from being out for part of the day in the rain and it just seemed to be a perfect way to get things going. The set consised of material of both of their LP's. Tracks I remember off the top of my head are "Dirtywhirl", "I Was a Lover", "The Wrong Way", "Staring At The Sun", "Dreams", "Province", "A Method", "Hours", "Let The Devil In", and without a doubt a full fledge rocking version of "Wolf Like Me." The set also had plenty of guests which assisted on vocals and an assortment of instruments.

cred
One of the coolest sites was the little girl on stage for the set closer of "Satellite" who was playing a shaker and watching Kyp get down on his knees in front of her while he was playing guitar and them both just staring at a each other. Anyhow, this was just a simply great show and what a way to end a killer week of live music. I do want to note that it was mighty cool of TV On The Radio to do this free show considering they could have easily charged $35.00 a ticket and most likely even sold out....but I guess it's just the way a cool band is willing to say thanks to their hometown crowd.

Sonic Youth-Daydream Nation

There are a few bands that made a lasting impression upon me as i have grown up that i would highly enjoy a single album set from. Among them:Pearl Jam "Ten", Weezer "The Blue Album", Smashing Pumpkins "Siamese Dream", Modest Mouse "Lonesome Crowded West", Radiohead "OK Computer", Phish "Junta", Pavement "Slanted & Enchanted", Portishead "Dummy", Neutral Milk Hotel "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea", Guns and Roses "Use your Illusion I & II", Sunny Day Real Estate "Diary", Red Hot Chili Peppers "Blood Sugar Sex Magic" plus several others. And of course, Sonic Youths'ever so classic iconic album "Daydream Nation." Last night the re-creation of this album took place during their last show on their summer tour and it was ever so sweet. At an absolutley packed McCarren Pool, fans of all ages gathered to be part of this "experience" . For some reason seeing an album performed live in its entirety from start to finish makes the concert just seem to be different from your every day show. From the very first note of "Teenage Riot" to the final note of "Trilogy: z) Elminator Jr." the set was pure bliss.

Sonic Youth reminded all in attendance why this album is an albums that will withstand the test of time. Thurston apologized to Mark Ibold prior to coming out for the encore since they wanted to perfrom the album "OG style". The encore included several other new songs which included "Incinerate", "Do You Believe in Rapture?" and show closer "Pink Steam" which just reminded everyone that even close to 20 years since releasing this album they still have what it takes be up there as one of the best. Thurston said that they would play all night if it were not for the "New York anarchy ordinances" and for some reason I do not doubt that they truly would have played all night if they had been allowed.

Happiest TV on the Radio Weekend

I am so excited for this weekend! This week has been SUCH A LONG WEEK! UGs. i almost didnt survive it for a second there. not to worry-it was just a second. If you had seen me at any of the lovely shows i went to this week i was always loyally lugging my Harry Potter book about. Poor Harry, the last book and i have been frantically reading it whenever i have a second here and there. So this weekend i am completely devoting to reading. Very excited about this. Leaving you with only one track to head into your weekend because i think it is bloody brillant.

So while the rest of the nYC blogging community has been discovering Bat For Lashes this week i have discovered Lee May Forster, the lady who was inspired to do the artwork for their website and merch. I am in LOVE. All of the mystical images of bats and unicorns. So lovely. Definitely check out her website. Very creative.

Klaxons cancel Australian Tour due to injury

cred
OUCH! To say the least this will be sad for all of their Aussie Fans. "Klaxons have cancelled their tour of Australia, as Jamie Reynolds has broken his leg. The affable frontman suffered the break when he jumped off stage at the Garden Nef Festival in France at the weekend. The band were due to begin their Australian tour on August 2, but are now hoping to resume their dates on August 11 at Summersonic in Japan. Reynolds posted a bulletin on Myspace, apologising to disappointed fans and promising he would use his "horizontal" time to work on new material." (NME)

Fiery Furnaces announce Free Show in Queens

cred
The The Fiery Furnaces will be performing at the Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City, Queens, NYC on Sunday, August 26th. This is one of my favorite places in all of New York and is the perfect backdrop for Eleanor and her frantic lyrics. Also, submissions are now being received for artists interested in displaying their works amongst the already established exhibit. Check it out here.

Additions to Vegoose Line-up

Late October Las Vegas plays host to the third annual Vegoose Festival, set to take place the weekend before Halloween on October 26 thru 28 at the Sam Boyd Stadium and nearby venues. Recently, The Shins, Ghostface Killah, Blonde Redhead, Battles, Thievery Corporation, UNKLE and Public Enemy were added to the lineup. Muse, Queens Of The Stone Age, Daft Punk, Ghostland Observatory, Gogol Bordello, Rage Against The Machine and The Stooges were already set to perform as well. Turning out to be an exciting festival for sure.

And I'm Slowly Turning Into You

Yes-yes, i know BV posted this photo too, but it is fantastic
White Stripes seems to be my theme band for 2007. At least since for the summer. Friends have commented on how my blog seems to have turned into 'ShelvesofWhiteStripes' and just recently this weekend i got into an argument with one of my friends over who was a better drummer, Meg or Kim from Matt and Kim. Obviously you all know who i chose. How is it even a competition?! It turned into such a discussion that the argument dissipated into me stating, 'It IS theWhite Stripes! I can't argue, they are the best!' Because, well...they are. Whether it is their song writing; their classic rock and roll sound; their incredibly awe inspiring live shows or their artistic aloofness they have completely cast me under their spell. A day does not go by where i don't click my way through iTunes to listen to a track or mentally compare a band to them. I am pretty sure i could go to see them perform everyday and always be struck with amazement at how good they are. It was a bit sad to see them last night at Madison Square Garden only because their Irving Plaza show was so overwhelming. I enjoyed last night's set immensely but was saddened that 'Rag n Bone' and 'St. Andrew' off of their latest album 'Icky Thump' weren't performed since they are highly enjoyable live. The audience seemed to come alive when a red or white light struck the disco ball and MSG was turned into the scene of an underwater red and white bubble fest. (at least that is what the overall effect was for me.) They were still the same old Jack and Meg, just on a larger scale. I am happy to see such a large audience love them just as much as a small room packed with intense fans. They are a band for the American Music Community to be proud of.

Dear Jack & Meg, Please return to nYc sometime soon-Cheers-Shelvesofvinyl

Aria C Jalali Press

Aria C Jalali has been receiving quite a bit of press which is highly exciting since i found their music to be immediately catchy and fun. Apparently Deli Magazine thinks along the same lines as us.

TDSF: So then, what is your songwriting process like?

ACJ: For my project, I write and record all of the songs, and the band supports me as a live act. For The French Architect it's a much more egalitarian process, with contributions from all the members.

ummmm...Yeah...go check it out!

Thom Yorke lends support to Friends of the Earth

Cred
I have always considered Thom Yorke to be an intelligent and compassionate artist and therefore was not surprised to learn that he is an active supporter for Friends Of The Earth. Via a video message Yorke proclaimed, "Reminding my MP to remind Gordon Brown that he's committed to a bill to reduce our CO2 emissions double quick time. And if he doesn't we're going to come down on him like a ton of bricks." Thom will be joining Razorlight's Johnny Borrell, KT Tunstall, Badly Drawn Boy and The Holloways are amongst the other celebrities who are already part of the campaign. The campaign hopes to draw attention and support for a proposed climate change law with stricter regulations and more aggressive measures.

What's a girl to do

I'd be lying if I didn't say that when flipping through the pages of Fader about a month ago that a picture of this gorgeous girl with extremely unique make-up didn't strike my attention. But it did, and it eventually led to me discover what I believe is arguably one of the more unique artists that i have heard in quite sometime. Natasha Kahn, aka Bat For Lashes, is the artist and last night marked my first chance to see her perform live. Her music can be called mysterious in every sense. With arrangments that are quite unique and lyrics that invite one into a fantasy world where it feels like you are a child being told mythical stories. With a voice that at times reminds one of Bjork, Natasha Kahn maintains her own style music and has a stage presence that makes it quite difficult to take your eyes off.

But beyond the voice, the lyrics, the several instruments she plays, Bat For Lashes consists of 3 other very talented female artists (Ginger Lee, Abi Fry, & Lizzie Carey) that perfectly compliment Natasha. On a personal note, I would not be surprised if this Natasha and her ensemble continues to build momentum and buzz (which they truly deserve) and one day finds themselves opening for the band I consider to be the wholy grail of rock bands in this day and age, Radiohead.

-Jaime W.

***Usually when Jaime and i venture out to a show together one of us decides who is going to write a review the next day, but after experiencing Bat For Lashes i couldn't help but add a few comments. Natasha and her band cast a spell with spooky, tingly music that is a combination of tambourine, bells, accordian, morraccas, egg shakers, and violin creating music that is eeriely stunning; be-witching the audience completely. I really loved the bells, chimes and her use of the tambourine on every track, for it was the first time i have seen an artist pay such attention to the extra spirited element these overlooked instruments create. I enjoyed the soft feminine vibe these ladies generated calming the audience-yet leaving them wanting more at the close of the show. For those of you who don't have plans on Wednesday night-Knitting Factory is the place to be.***

Siren Fest re-CAP

The Twilight Sad *cred*
I was incredibly satisfied with having to wake up 'early' on a Saturday morning to trek out to see The Twilight Sad five seconds into their performance. Yep-five seconds. Their enchanting songs were just as vivid and bold live. They had a bit of difficulty with their sound check which i worried would cause them to be tense and rushed on stage, but they were neither. Brazenly claiming their presence on stage they marked themselves as a band i think it definitely one to watch. I am hoping that some important music people checked them out for their sake. They deserve to be opening for bands such as The National, The Magic Numbers or The Editors with similar moody sounds and mysterious melodies. Granted, not really the type of music to turn out for on a bright, sunny July day, but overwhelmingly worth it.

Elvis Perkins
After The Twilight Sad set wrapped up i happily left Jaime to go watch one of my favorite acts, Elvis Perkins. The last time i saw Elvis he was opening for Cold War Kids at Bowery Ballroom where i completely fell in love. He clearly plans every second of his stagetime which shows in both his music and style. At first Elvis approaches the audience and commences with 'While You Were Sleeping' while the other members of his band gracefully join him one by one. Silently slipping into their places, putting down their beers and reuniting with their instruments. Elvis is a gift among the music scene these days. Like Andrew Birds and Antonymusic is more than just a format of expression for him but a true obstacle to tackle and meld into his own unique creation.

The Black Lips *cred*
I was sad to have skipped the Dr. Dog set as i have yet to see him perform. Jaime absolutely loves him and throughly enjoyed the performance. We took a bit of a break before heading over to check out the tail end of The Black Lips. This was the first band to make a convert out of me on Saturday. I enjoyed their fiesty energy as much as their sound. They were a perfect summer festival band and it was clear the audience was enjoying them.

My Lavendar Diamond *cred*
After leaving The Black Lips we wandered over to My Lavendar Diamond. She sounded lovely, but sadly, i felt she was a bit out of place with the whole beach, Siren Festival Vibe.

Matt and Kim *cred*
My favorite awakening of the day was during Matt and Kim. I had never really understood the buzz surrounding them and their live shows. Now i completely get it. Matt, with his exuberant voice comes across as the most jovial male performer i have ever seen. Whereas most male singers put energy into being either funny or mysterious, Matt with his youthful presence draws you in and fills you with happiness throughout their set. Their songs are lighthearted and the audience reponds with happy dancing, clapping and cheers. They were incredibly pleased to be performing to an audience at their favorite place on earth, Brooklyn and it showed. Tearing through each song i was very impressed overall. Definitely made me want to run home and put them on my ipod immediately.

I reallllllyyyy wanted to see M.I.A. but it was SO crowded by this time. It was very apparent that most of the crowd came out for the bands scheduled to close out the day. We couldn't hear her at all from where we were and all i could see was that she was wearing something sparkely. I really was curious to see how she translated live, hopefully i will have another chance soon-and hopefully i won't have to go to Studio B for it.

According to BrooklynVegan she was lovely. As lovely as Di Fara pizza? Tough competition since that is where i ended up due to getting pushed back from M.I.A. and i can officially say it is the best pizza i have ever tasted. The whole experience is something you must do while you are visiting or living in nYc. You will not be disappointed. Family run the owner gently makes the pizza right in front of you while you wait at the counter...salivating over every move. It is well worth the wait just to watch him create his magic. My favorite bit was how slowly and deliberately he moved and how respectful everyone was who were waiting for their slice or pies. A truly magical place. I highly recommend the red peppers that live in a white container on the counter and melt into the pizza as soon as you place them on top of the cheese. I must thank my friend Rebecca since she shared this grand bit of New York with me.

HAppy (Harry Potter/Siren) WeeksSends

"The way we're describing it is a fruity vodka with a spicy kick, which is a way you could describe the city of New Orleans. TIM MURPHY-a spokesman on Absolut New Orleans vodka, a new drink flavored with mango and black pepper. Its profits will be used to help re-build the city." Hmm...not so sure how i feel about this. Maybe if our f'in government took some responsibility for our own people than Absolut wouldn't need to lure us to have another excuse to drink. Enough said.

So i know my postings today have been *w-E-a-K* to say the least, but hey, i am super ansy and on edge for my Harry Potter! I am. i will completely admit it. My angelic sister offered to buy a copy at the Borders in Maryland to assure that i will get a copy of the poster they are giving away since i am guessing it will be mass madness in the city tonight. Still...very excited. Hope everyone has a good weekend. So many good shows going on. Please make it out to Siren Festival. Harry Potter Day

"It is Ms. Rowling’s achievement in this series that she manages to make Harry both a familiar adolescent — coping with the banal frustrations of school and dating — and an epic hero, kin to everyone from the young King Arthur to Spider-Man and Luke Skywalker. This same magpie talent has enabled her to create a narrative that effortlessly mixes up allusions to Homer, Milton, Shakespeare and Kafka, with silly kid jokes about vomit-flavored candies, a narrative that fuses a plethora of genres (from the boarding-school novel to the detective story to the epic quest) into a story that could be Exhibit A in a Joseph Campbell survey of mythic archetypes. In doing so, J. K. Rowling has created a world as fully detailed as L. Frank Baum’s Oz or J. R. R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth, a world so minutely imagined in terms of its history and rituals and rules that it qualifies as an alternate universe, which may be one reason the “Potter” books have spawned such a passionate following and such fervent exegesis. With this volume, the reader realizes that small incidents and asides in earlier installments (hidden among a huge number of red herrings) create a breadcrumb trail of clues to the plot, that Ms. Rowling has fitted together the jigsaw-puzzle pieces of this long undertaking with Dickensian ingenuity and ardor. Objects and spells from earlier books — like the invisibility cloak, Polyjuice Potion, Dumbledore’s Pensieve and Sirius’s flying motorcycle — play important roles in this volume, and characters encountered before, like the house-elf Dobby and Mr. Ollivander the wandmaker, resurface, too." All of the numerous taunts i have recieved over the years about how these books are rubbish and how i am a dork for re-reading all of them before the release of a new book...so sad to see it all end. Especially since it is being released during a weekend and upcoming week full of shows to go see, leaving me little time for complete Potter indulgence. Recommend checking out the rest of the review here.

White Stripes-Finish Canadian Tour

So they completed what they set out to do-touring every providence in Canada and Rollingstone Magazine nicely provides us with the photos to prove it. Glide Magazine covers the adventures of their friend Dafun during his journey to the Stripe's 700th gig on the last night of their Canadian voyage.
"Glace Bay is located almost as far east as you can go on the island of Cape Breton, the easternmost part of Nova Scotia. The theater for the duo’s 10th Anniversary show held about 700 people and was painted red, white and black. This crowd was out-of-control-excited. The room was filled in ton of relative of Jack’s — I sat direct next to 91-year-old women who was related to Jack’s grandmother. Prior to the show, they brought champagne out to celebrate the occasion. The show began with bagpipers and a drummer leading the band out. From start to finish, as you’d probably expect, the show was amazing, a captivating affair."
Craziness...i would have loved to be at any of their secret engagements! I highly recommend checking out the rest of his report along with lovely video clips.

Have to love Jack White in a kilt!

Ladies-Alphabet City-Lower East Side-BE CAREFUL!

July 19, 2007 -- The sex fiend who molested three Lower East Side women since June struck for a fourth time early yesterday, authorities said. In the latest sickening attack, the creep ran up behind a 20-year-old woman on East Ninth Street near Second Avenue at 1:50 a.m., he put her in a chokehold, shoved his hand up her skirt and ran off, police said.
"I heard some yelling or screaming . . . she didn't yell for help," said neighbor Emily Gerstell, 22, who moved there because she thought the busy block was safe."It's just upsetting . . . it's really terrifying," Gerstell said. Bernie Dobrzynsky, 53, whose window overlooks the scene where the victim - who neighbors said is an NYU student - was watching TV around the time of the attack and heard muffled noises. "After what I hear now I am sorry I didn't look out the window," Dobrzynsky lamented.
Detectives spent the day yesterday interviewing the victim at a local hospital and showed her the sketch of the suspect in the three other cases to see if he matched the description of the man who abused her, cops said.

Sadly-wait extended for new Streets album

Feelin' a bit slaggish there Mike?
Those brits seem to be having a hard time with things lately-Amy Winehouse cancelling shows and spitting on fans-Beckham being sold to the US-Harry Potter being leaked on the internet and now Mike Skinner has exclaimed via his handy myspace page that The Streets has been pushed back another year. "Making an album when you're quite well known is a bit stressful, "I've had to accept this week that because my album isn't quite right yet it won't be coming out this year. I think I've got the makings of a great record, but I've been working so hard on it my head is spinning at the end of every day and when I wake up each morning the first thing I feel is panic. I've decided to try to get some distance from it while we do this Scotland tour, Get Loaded (In The Park) and Ibiza. This also means I'll maintain my tidy pattern of releasing an album in 2002, 2004, 2006 and, now, 2008." This album would be the followup to The Streets widely successful 2006 album, 'The Hardest Way To Make An Easy Living.' Then again it is always better when your favorite artists don't feel rushed and forced into producing another album-take all of the time you need Mike.

And all we'd buy was trainers...

Nifty Trainers, eh?
Really Lil? I would have pegged you for more of an Adidas or Puma girl. I am a loyal Puma girl myself. Although she does sport the Air Max 90's in her video for 'Smile'-so i guess it works. In addition to her world wide jaunce that has her playing dates in Europe, Australia and here along the West Coast it seems Miss. Allen will also be adding 'Speciality Trainers Designer Extrodinaire' to her list of accomplishments. Is it bad that i want a pair? "The limited addition trainer is called Lily Allen Air Max 90, and is red, white and blue with stars on the laces."
