Sadly skipping NYC...

Maybe they felt we were too spoiled by their various appearances during the month of October but i am still sad to see that Band of Horses will not be playing New York during their upcoming tour. The boys kick off their dates with a three night run at The Earl in Atlanta, Georgia. Cease to Begin is an album I cannot recommend enough, Ben Bridwell comes into his own as both a singer and a songwriter laying down some of the best lyrics of 2007. Check out their live in studio performance at KEXP at Gibson Studios posted below as well.

Orchestras lend support to Decemberists upcoming tour

By now it has been widly reported that The Decemberists are returning to New York City for a slot at this years Summerstage in Central Park with local Brooklyn artists Grizzly Bear. If you have not yet procured a ticket to this summer nighttime event i highly urge you to do so. Both bands have such story teller lyrics backed up with melodous music that will be perfect for Summerstage. Billboard Magazine reports how other cities will be viewing The Decemberists with some very special support, Orchestra support that is.

"This July, The Decemberists will perform alongside local orchestras at select dates in amphitheaters in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Chicago and Columbia, Md. The Portland, Ore.-based act is currently playing 1,500- to 3,000-capacity theaters in support of its Capitol debut, "The Crane Wife," which has sold 214,000 copies in the United States since its October release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The idea to match The Decemberists with orchestras came after Johanna Rees, who has booked similar shows at Los Angeles' Hollywood Bowl, approached the act's booking agent, Kevin French with Bigshot Touring Artists "I was the liaison between the band and the orchestra folks, because they don't really know how the rock world works," Rees tells Billboard.com. "And if you're a fan, it's such a perfect band to put with an orchestra. Musically, they're just astounding." To help organize the dates, Rees, who also books the L.A.'s Walt Disney Concert Hall, reached out to various venue and orchestra promoters around the country. "I needed to make sure all the pieces fit together," she says. "Obviously, an orchestra promoter won't be able to promote a rock concert the way it needs to be promoted." In 2004, Rees paired French electronic duo Air with an orchestra for a sold-out concert at the 17,300-seat Hollywood Bowl. And over the next two years, she did the same with Dead Can Dance (2005) and Belle and Sebastian (2006). "After the third year, the artists, managers and agents started calling -- and so did some of the orchestra promoters that I know," Rees says. "They were wondering how to be a part of it." For the Decemberists July 7 concert at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Rees predicts many concertgoers will simply attend out a desire to experience something different. "I think people are just interested in seeing a band play with an orchestra, even if they don't know the band or orchestra that well." Indie act Band Of Horses will open the show. For the orchestra shows, the Decemberists will play songs from their entire catalog, according to sources close to the band. Leading up to the five orchestra-backed concerts, the band will play the Coachella and Bonnaroo festivals. A theatre tour is expected in the fall which hit 4,500-17,300-capacity sheds, the Decemberists are scheduled to appear at Indio, Calif.'s Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival on April 28, and Manchester, Tenn.'s Bonnaroo Festival on June 17. Beyond that, the band is expected to hit theaters again this fall."

Here are the Decemberists summer tour dates:

June 16: Manchester, Tenn. (Bonnaroo Festival)
July 7: Los Angeles (Hollywood Bowl, w/ L.A. Philharmonic, Band Of Horses)
July 13: Atlanta (Chastain Park, w/ Atlanta Symphony Orchestra)
July 14: Columbia, Md. (Merriweather Post Pavilion, w/ Baltimore Symphony
Orchestra)
July 15: Philadelphia (Mann Center for the Performing Arts, w/ Mann Festival
Orchestra)
July 16: New York (Central Park Summerstage, w/ Grizzly Bear)
July 18: Chicago (Jay Pritzker Pavillion, w/ Grant Park Orchestra)
July 22: Troutdale, Ore. (Edgefield Winery, w/ Menomena)

*i also throughly enjoy the whole aesthetic value behind The Decemberists so i invite you to check out this artist who reminds me a bit of the artwork on Crane's Wife as well as the artwork link on their website.

Two shows this week that deserve your lovins

First up are my loves The Rosewood Thieves. Still not sure why people are not falling all over themselves for this band like I am. My dearest friend was lucky enough to see them during Jazz Fest in New Orleans at a venue that sounds like it was tailor made for their particular brand of magic. It was one of the only times he has ever resorted to the use of text messaging on his cell phone which is why i know it was that special sort of experience. The bands' sophomore release Rise and Shine only sets in stone what I have already been preaching since their discovery, that Erick is without a doubt an incredibly talented songwriter and performer. Tonight they are playing at Galapagos with Blow Up Hollywood, Sam Bisbee, Kirsten DeHaan, The Nillaz and Discrete Encounter. Tickets are $15 and you can purchase them here or at the door. If i wasn't heading for the comforts of green forests and skies full of stars for a few days I would be truckin on over to BOTH of the Sera Cahoone shows (Friday at Bowery Ballroom and Saturday at Union Hall in Brooklyn-both opening for label mate Grand Archives). I have been meaning to write about her magical voice and music history for month but never feel like my words describe her album enough. Signed to Sub Pop and a former member of Carissa's Wierd (aka the band members of Band of Horses BEFORE they were Band of Horses) she has also been flying a bit under the radar.

New Band of Horses

Check out the opening track off the upcoming Band of Horses' album 'Cease to Begin.' I think that Bridwell sounds a bit different on this track than the last album, 'Everything All The Time' a bit higher pitched maybe? Enjoy. *Thanks Russ'F'*

All I need is a song to save my soul

It is November and I have finally caught back up with my work for my real job after all of the CMJ/presidental madness. Once again during CMJ i lended a hand to the ever so wonderful people over at KEXP during their in studio sessions that they hold all week long at Gibson Studios(formerly known as the Hit Factory). Being amongst some of the most knowledgeable music lovers this country has to offer is always the best week of my year. Hands down. Nothing else can even come close to comparing being in a room with people you respect who are all banning together to broadcast non-profit programming that they so dearly believe in. It is as close to the music as you can get. You also get to find out about new music coming out of Portland and Seattle, two cities that seem to just be bursting with creative talent these days, especially when it comes to Americana/Folk/Alt-Country/Bluegrass/Wonderfulness. The Moondoggies hail from Seattle, Washington and are supported by Sub Pop's sister label (and home to our beloved Le Loup): Hardly Art.

"There is a popular chapter of American mythology that pertains to The Highway. It tells of a two-way ribbon of blacktop running endlessly through our past to our future, linking city to country, offering escape and motion and freedom to travel anywhere the imagination might wander. In this chapter, The Highway is both means and end, metaphor and reality.

And down that mythical Highway there is a Bar. Inside that Bar is a Stage. On that Stage is a Band. That Band is the Moondoggies.
"

Kevin Murphy (vocalist), Robert Terreberry (bass), Carl Dahlen (drums), and Caleb Quick (keys) have been playing together since they were teenagers and after the band took up residence at a local dive bar, Blue Moon Tavern (a 70 year old haunt in the University District) the equation for moody blues and raucous live shows was complete. Don't Be A Stranger is their debut album and has led them to tour dates in and around their hometown with the equally talented The Maldives. Layers of blues, rock, folk, country and gospel radiate with sunshine and love-soaked days making the record hard to put down and impossible to forget. With all of the albums floating around this year that draw upon music of the 60's and 70's what makes The Moondoggies separate themselves from bands like Band of Horses and Fleet Foxes is that vein of pure indulgence and outright joy. You get a sense that the boys are swaying back and forth clutching their beloved instruments and enjoying their music as much as you are as you stroll down the street, falling in love with their album with every step you take. I have my eye out for tour dates like a hawk circling for that stray rabbit...so be aware kids.

I made it through this year...

Even though at some points it was a wee bit hairy there. 2007 saw so much good music that i have literally been carrying around a list with me for the last two weeks and finally just decided to shove off and post it- even if i am still a bit weary of the order of things. There were SO many good albums and some of the ones left off are ones Jaime adores, so I made a list of picks he loved as well. I hope you all have been enjoying this festive holiday season with the ones you love and have been sharing~giving~ and writing lots of music with/for your friends and family. THANK YOU ALL for reading, taking songs, making comments, everything and anything for this blog. It was one of my New Years resolutions for the last year and it has brought me so much happiness. All of the bands i have written about hold a special place with me which is why i try to give them as much attention as i possibly can and you should too. I hope you all have a lovely safe, happy, healthy and MUSICAL NEW YEAR! So much love!

Dappled Cities 'Fly'

Hey Boys-how do you like nYc?
Dappled Cities otherwise known as 'Dappled Cities Fly' are the latest sensation to make their way out of Australia. The five bandmates, Hugh Boyce on drums, Dave Rennick on vocals, guitar and keys, Ned Cooke on keys and samples, Alex Moore on bass and Tim Derricourt on vocals, guitar and keys have left Sydney behind to tour with the likes of Tokyo Police Club and The Fratellis. Their album, 'Granddance' was released in 2006 and recently was released in the US on July 3rd via Dangerbird Records home to Sea Wolf, Silversun Pickups and fellow tourmates All Smiles. I must say, i haven't overwhelmingly enjoyed a band as much as i am enjoying them since Peter, Bjorn and John. 'Beach Song' happily reminded me of Depeche Mode or The Cure, timing in with that 80's electronic sound i love so much. The thing that is great about this band is each track sounds different adding an exciting element that keeps you interested and guessing where their next sound will come from. 'Watercourse' is a more mellow track with melodies similar to that of Band of Horses whereas 'Fire Fire Fire' is upbeat and jumpy. I am very curious to hear what their live show is like. Boudist has photos from some of their live shows in their local land. Meanwhile check out all of their upcoming tour dates listed below.

Thursday and Friday-CMJ! Bands you *MUST* go see

And by MUST i mean *SHOULD* we are not about being pushy here folks, but these next two mornings/days/nights have some excellent talent packed into their wee hours. Starting off one of my favorite bands out of Pennsylvania, The Shackeltons, they are playing at Pianos tomorrow night at 9:00 PM. Their sets are packed with energy leaking out of every guitar riff and lyrics that shock you with brutal honesty and raw emotion. Check out what Sentimentalist Magazine has to say about them; "With an explosive urgency that thrives on neat, loud-soft-loud bursts of poetry and gritty chaos, singer Mark Redding performs both live and on record as if the words he’s spewing are thrusting out his demons. The drama almost cannot be contained. Think of the fun and hellfire of The Gun Club or Birthday Party, but with the tight finesse of Interpol and Fugazi, and you’ll begin to get the idea." They are on John in The Mornings' record label, Loveless Records-so if both of those bits of information combined to do not convince you- i don't know what will!

Next on the list is Black Kids at the Annex tonight at 10:00 PM or tomorrow during BrookylnVegans' showcase at Pianos at 4:45 PM. I cannot say how their show is live, but I am sure Jaime will take notes for those of us who won't be able to make it out!

The Epochs-talent like this comes along only once in well...an Epoch! Ohhhh!
I am very excited to tell you to check out The Epochs tonight. I was lucky enough to check both of these talented band earlier this week during their visits to KEXP, which you can go back and stream/podcast, review here. Lovely. The Epochs are just an incredible find for me this week. I wish there was more being made about them and Eagle Seagull, for i think both of those bands should have been on everyone's lips this week. I had heard of both of them before but really didn't take the time to check them out and well...they will both be on my list for the end of the year albums to check out, shows to check out...well you get the idea. BRILLIANT! You can check them out tonight at R Bar with Takka Takka (10:30 PM) and benzos (11:45 PM)- and The Epochs are closing out the night-this is gonna be a late one!

The Foals-the other band alluding to horses that you should check out
Next on the list besides Yeasayer (tomorrow-BV Party-Pianos), Islands (tomorrow-BV Party-Pianos), British Seapower (Tonight At Bowery Ballroom) is THE FOALS (they will also be LIVE on KEXP tomorrow at 4:00 PM). Just from listening to everyone talking about them it sounds like they are insane live. Again, you can check them at BrooklynVegan's showcase at Pianos on Saturday along with Tiny Masters of Today, The Maccabees and King Left.

More 'Wolf' band news...this time en francais! LE LOUP!

Normally i try not to push things on people. Well-i mean not in a totally over the top aggressive manner-but somethings should be forced. Especially if you are from Maryland and your beloved state is lucky enough to be home to one of the most exciting new bands out there. If you have yet to check out Le Loup well then today is your lucky day! Their debut album came out today! YeaH! So go BUY it. Support them! Go to their shows! But most importantly share. If you like them share with your friends as much as you can (drag them to a show, make them a mixed CD of Wolf inspired-named Bands, IM them the album)-i am sure they would approve. Us Marylanders/DC folk are all about the friendly manners- we are technically below the Mason Dixon Line. Also, definitely go visit Brightest Young Things as they review the new album, The Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations Millennium General Assembly, and interact with these youngsters in the wilds of their 'natural habitat.' Oh yeah. Beautiful blog and review!

this shot just makes me homesick-yeah DC ZOO!
Also add October 3rd and October 2oth to your calendars for their upcoming shows at Bowery Ballroom. The 20th is going to be a hot ticket due to the madness that is CMJ so grab those early! Even with the competition of Justice it is sure to sell out. Le Loup, The Brunettes, Band of Horses and British sensation Foals- damn CMJ just packs them in!

Songs I annoyed my co-workers with this year

Today is not only the day of posting my end of the year lists, it is also my last day at a company where i learned so many important life lessons- one of which is how to blast KEXP as loud as possible and how to break people down enough to the point where they love what you do. Hey- it is New York, tough love is how we roll here. Plus, change is good!

CMJ is quickly approaching us folks-

On one hand a lot of the shows during CMJ are free- on the other hand you have to have special invites, passwords, and sometimes a little bit of luck to gain passage into some of the best engagements this city has to offer during one of it's most hectic music-loving weeks. PHEEW! i am so excited though. Somehow your body just finds the energy to carry you through that week and when it is over you feel like no show you go to see will ever top what you just experienced. Or at least that was me last year. (The Rapture, The Knife, Girl Talk, Cold War Kids, Elvis Perkins...!!!) One of my favorite experiences was the free in studio sessions that KEXP hosts. Not only do you get to see your favorite DJs up close and personal but the bands were fantastic. (Forward Russia! kicked all kinds of fantastic'ness-Tokyo Police Club-Hot Chip-Rosewood Thieves)...so HURRY AND SIGN UP NOW! Spots are already filling up-Band of Horses for example on Friday is already full. A lot of acts have yet to be announced but that shouldn't stop you, each and every one is sure to be worth it. Plus it is FREE....and KEXP! Bring it CMJ! And in the meantime you can keep yourself pre-occupied with their latest edition of KEXP instudio sessions:

It's been a long and lovely week...

I had been looking forward to this week for a long time as my calendar began to fill up with some of my favorite live acts from 2007. The Foals, Yeasayer, MGMT, Band of Horses, Blue Scholars...very very exciting. Then this morning after I settled into being at work after three nights of late music I checked out the new Black Keys track, Strange Times. Their upcoming album 'Attack & Release' will be out on April 1st via Nonesuch Records. I hope everyone enjoyed their weeks as well...it's the weekend!

This hurts my heart

The 'devil' interfering with our music
Damn you Walmart. Band of Horses you disappoint me. So upsetting. Hopefully sharing this with you will make your day even itself out. Thank you Pitchfork and Diplo. Sick. sick. sick. It is the perfect workout/dance party/perk yourself up in the office mix you were searching for for Fall '07.
