The Dodos

Are Jaime's favorite new band, or at least one of the many. When Jaime gets excited about these things those around him tend to notice so I decided to do some homework this week. The Dodos were enjoyable straightaway. I definitely like the low level of production. The tacktile feeling of the drum sticks clicking in the background and the rough edges will be enjoyable for those who like their rock and roll with healthy doses of easy going melodies and cleverly calculated harmonies. On my favorite track, Men Logan Kroeber awards his listeners with a feverishly paced race on his kit and Meric Long snares you with cheeky lyrics that will leave you eagerly awaiting their upcoming engagement at the Mercury Lounge. Dodos Live at 6:oo (EST) on KEXP!

One of the things I am most looking forward to this summer is seeing The Dodos again. I will be getting my chance during the Pitchfork Music Festival in July and for those of you staying in the city you can see them for free at the Siren Music Festival out in Coney Island on July 19th. One of my favorite bands of the year the Dodos of course remind me of Animal Collective and Panda Bear (and a dash of White Stripes). I am happy I was finally educated on Panda Bear and thanks to one of the best Sundays I ever spent they sank in and I fell head over heels in love with their eclectic and chirpy lit. Spend sometime with The Dodos and you are sure to have the same experience. It will be worth the indulgence, trust me. They are stopping by KEXP today at 6:oo PM (EST) and 3:oo Seattle time. Their Daytrotter sessions is one of my favorites so i am sure KEXP will be just as enjoyable. Or it might just make those last few minutes of work tick by a little quicker.

We stand worlds apart

The Dodos are ablaze with energy and sound. I however am not due to a chest infection...hence this review being posted a little bit after the fact. If they are making their way to your town you should DEFINITELY check them out. They will be back in the city for Siren Festival 2008! Loved...and it would be easy to say it is because they sound like a band who dreams in the world of Animal Collective and lives their days in the world of the White Stripes. Mainly it was because during their set i was able to completely relax and enjoy wherever their songs happened to take me. I was genuinely impressed by Meric Long and Logan Kroeber and their ability to muster such energy on a late Sunday night, though it was incredibly hard to see them and their third band mate behind the sold out masses. Their set was full of light and spacious lullabies. It was enchanting and beautiful. Then they would strike out with a bluesy, tangled, messy ensemble of sliced lyrics that made the real rock lover in me incredibly happy. It was a peaceful meeting of the minds in my own heart--the bit of me that delights in simple, sweet, flowing melodies and the bit of me that loves loud, rough grooves and wailing guitars. Although they may only have one album, Visiter- these two young ones stretch their songs well beyond the definition of a 'young band starting out.'

the RUBY suns*~`

Today The Dodos announced a tour date for September at the Spiegeltent which reminded me of The Ruby Suns who hail from New Zealand and remind me of Panda Bear and the like. Unlike these two bands they have a wider range of instruments and definitely experiment more with a free-flowing folk'eske sort of sound. But not the Americana folk songs that you are used to, these sound like what you would imagine New Zealanders would create in their land of dense forests and fern covered paths. Lush and exotic listening to them is like taking a mini-vacation if you remember how to get in touch with your imagination at the end of the day. If you check out their myspace page make sure to stop by their friends, Men Amongst Animals who remind me of The French Kicks hanging out with The Shins. Definitely check out their track Slow Years. Very enjoyable. The Ruby Suns will be playing the city on July 29th and 30th (Williamsburg Music Hall and Bowery Ballroom respectively). Tickets are still available.

in 2009 we get new YEASAYER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*Yeasayer this past Saturday at Williamsburg Music Hall
I could not be awaiting an album with more anticipation than the new Yeasayer album. This past weekend I saw them at Williamsburg Music Hall in front of a sold out hometown audience almost exactly a year to the date from their sold out show at the Mercury Lounge. I was so in love with them back then that it is hard for me to break it down into exactly what has changed in the band or how it makes me feel but i know it is all a very good thing. They have taken their already beautiful songs and strong sets and taken to another level of being so smooth and seamless you would have thought they have about four or five albums and tours of experience behind them. Their show on Saturday found them as tight as I have ever seen them after fourteen months of various cities and venues. The intros into their songs were the longest they have ever lavished upon my ears and they seemed so happy to be home that their overwhelming joy was immediately contagious and spread across the crowd graciously gathered awaiting their every strum of their guitars and beat of their drums, bongos, cymbals, keyboard strokes...etc. It is going to be highly enjoyable to see where their next album takes them and I cannot wait for more tour dates to be announced once they have given themselves a bit of a rest. They are one of my favorite bands on the scene and for all of those people who say there is nothing like old music and records and there are no good bands I just cannot even listen to them whine anymore. With bands like Panda Bear, Yeasayer, Cat Power, The National, Magnetic Fields, Jessica Lea Mayfield, The Dodos, Arctic Monkeys, LCD Soundsystem, Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes and Hot Chip there is more talent than you can spend time listening to and I could not be happier for feeling this way every day.

It's too easy...

How could the indie world not love this foursome out of Cambridge, MA...it is such an easy sell. They play music that sounds so similar to MGMT it is a no-brainier. Of course I liked them after the first listen of Sleepyhead and am not surprised that French Kiss Records and the Agency Group have already branded Pop Levi as their very own. The boys just finished up a residency at Pianos which had the industry folk all a twitter this week and will be opening for the French Kicks at Bowery Ballroom on September 24th.
