NAIROBI (AFP) - Poachers have killed seven elephants near Kenya's Tsavo National Park over the past month, wildlife officials said Tuesday. The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) said the animals died in a migrating corridor near the Kenya-Tanzania border, where seven Tanzanian poachers and their Kenyan guide were arrested over the weekend. "Of the seven elephants, we recovered tusks for only two," Tsavo chief warden Julius Cheptei told AFP. Cheptei said the elephants were killed in the nearby Koranze ranch, which serves as a corridor for the animals when migrating from Tsavo to Tanzania's northeastern Mkomazi Game Reserve. "We suspect that the Tanzanians we arrested over the weekend are part of a syndicate that is notorious for poaching. But we have intensified security in the parks and along the corridors," he added. Poaching slashed Kenya's elephant population from nearly 50,000 in 1965 to about 10,600 in the early 1990s but conservation efforts and anti-poaching measures saw numbers inch back up to 30,000. The state-run KWS said most poachers in southwestern Kenya cross over from Tanzania, where they have nearly wiped out wildlife in Mkomazi Game Reserve. "These incursions could be a result of a lack of wildlife in many parts of Tanzania caused by abused licensed hunting," KWS spokesman Paul Udoto explained. Over the weekend, KWS increased surveillance in the country's animal sanctuaries after 214 of kilograms of zebra and wildebeest meat destined for Nairobi markets were impounded. Last month, the 171-nation Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) approved a landmark nine-year ban on international ivory trade to stem a surge in poaching that has killed up to 20,000 elephants per year.

Bumbershoot Festival Lineup is complete!

Another Seattle music festival is on the horizon for you crazy festival fans. For those of us who are suffering through this hot summer it is nice to daydream about clear cool Seattle days spent listening to Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Tokyo Police Club, and John Legend who are the most recent additions to the lineup for Seattle's Bumbershoot Music and Arts Festival. Previously announced acts included: The Shins, Panic! At The Disco!, Crowded House and Kings of Leon. The 37th annual festival is set to take place September 1-3 at the 74-acre Seattle Center. Like most festivities that take place in Seattle extra steps have been taken to make the event as *Green* as possible. "This year, festival organisers have introduced several greening initiatives such as using bio-diesel generators and banning Styrofoam to make it the greenest Bumbershoot in its nearly four-decade history." -Via NME

In other Kings of Leon news drummer Nathan Followill recently proposed to his longtime girlfriend Jessie Baylin. I was a little torn over posting this bit of 'news' because i completely loathe gossip about my favorite bands and about 95% of the time it is pure rubbish...but here it goes... you can read it all over at NME.

Little Boxes on the hillside...little boxes made of ticky-tack

I know where i will be on monday nights throughout August-happily planted on my futon to watch the third season of Weeds. How are Nancy and Conrad going to get out of this one and is Mary Kate Olsen really joining the cast?! But seriously, anything with Justin Kirk is just magic to me. Love him! And the opening song of course. Last season Regina Spektor, Jenny Lewis, Death Cab for Cutie, Elvis Costello and others lended their version of the catchy theme song. This year new comers Joan Baez, Donovan, Billy Bob Thornton, The Shins, Michael Franti, The Individuals, Angelique Kidjo, Kinky and Man Man, and Persephone's Bees will give it a try. "The show's third season will kick off on Monday, Aug. 13 with Grammy and Oscar winner Randy Newman singing the semi-classic Malvina Reynolds track."

Tim Armstrong

I was so excited when i first heard the latest project from Tim Armstrong after having spent most of my middle school years rocking out to Rancid and Operation Ivy. Timothy Lockwood, otherwise known as Tim Armstrong provided the soundtrack for many a summer Warped Tour Festivals before they became yucky emo pits of dispair...not music. It is sad, but true-and everyone knows it. I cannot even count the number of times i saw Rancid but i remember loving each and every show, no matter how old my friends kept saying they were getting. To me, their music was ageless. Tim's latest project is a solo album. A very enjoyable solo album. A mix of ska, punk, reggea and funk it is very different from what you would expect-displaying just how talented of an artist he truly is. It made me want to dust off my Sublime albums, climb up to my roof and bask in the summer sunshine. It could also work if you want to seek shelter with your friendly AC unit. Choose your locale and give it a listen.
