Dear Mister Ryan Adams...I was wrong

cred
So they say admitting you are wrong is healthy in life. All of those times i argued with Jaime about how Ryan Adams is not that great, how i had no desire to go see him live, how his songs are kinda cheesy and over the top...yes yes- i must have been completely dillusional at the time. That and i just honestly hadn't given myself over to sitting down and sharing a little bit of space with Ryan. Last night was about as intimate as you can get when it comes to an artist as loved and cherished as Ryan is in New York City. Hiro Ballroom was the perfect setting for him and his bandmates who were just as piercingly melodious as their singer. Ryan led us through some of his new songs adding chatter here and there. He seemed completely comfortable on stage as his songs came across so strongly that it transported me to a completely calm and serene place. At moments i wished i had someone to ask if songs were new or old but this was a show where it did not matter how much or how little you knew Ryan Adams or his songs. It was beautiful American singer songwriter talent at it's best. It is possible to search through all of the guitar players and love songs and find true gems, even in the present which finds us so far from where Bob and John started out. So when you see performers such as Ryan,Elvis or Jack you completely re-invest in this music scene and the talent that is just reaching its' peak right now. I am excited about my new found love for Ryan and invite you to read the reviews of more seasoned fans than i. So thank you Jaime- i was wrong.

Halloweenhead @ Hammerstein

Jaime loved it-MusicSlut did NOT
I am a bit biased because I am still in the honeymoon stages when it comes to Ryan Adams. After many years of refusing to listen to his music or see his shows due to the horrific stories of his raw exhibitions of alcoholism and debauchery or just plan stubbornness I finally gave in when Jaime dragged me to a show. Ever since he has grown on me to the point where I was sad to have missed last nights' show at Hammerstein due to my previous commitment to going to see the Black Crowes with Patti Smith. The ever loyal Jaime went and reports back with exclamations of a killer show with a stellar set list:

Ryan Adams set to release 'Easy Tiger' on June 25th

*Village Indian during last years' Bowery Ballroom set.
Oh-and if anyone is excited about this- it would be our lovely Jaime W! Apparently the only thing distracting him from the brillant performances by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings was a 'mis-educated' Bright Eyes fan spouting garbage about Mr. Ryan Adams seated in front of him during Friday's show- the nerve! Hopefully this news will cheer him up a bit. It seems Ryan has officially announced the release date for 'Easy Tiger' and has further plans to release a box set after he releases his new album.
"According to a spokesperson for his US label Lost Highway, the collective may include live tracks as well as unreleased albums '48 Hours', 'The Suicide Handbook', 'Bedhead' and songs from the 'Easy Tiger' sessions, reports Billboard. A spokesperson for his US label Lost Highway said that the box set would not include tracks he released via Ryan-Adams.com under the monikers DJ Reggie, WereWolph, The Shit and others. He said: "That wasn't meant to be anything more than just a laugh. It was a thing to do after shows. It was like having garage band wars. It was fund- a chance experiment with rap stuff."
Of 'Easy Tiger' Adams said: "It's a bunch of individual poems, really, and I have no reservations about trying to link anyting together. I still feel even unfamiliar with this record. Even though I wrote them, I still feel like I don't know enough about them yet."Adams added that he was annoyed at critics who had a go at his work ethic (he released three albums between 2005 and 2006), explaining: "I ignore the people that say I'm at fault for being a hard worker. It's completely unreasonable."

*And yes, I know this isn't off R.E.M.'s debut album but it is one of my most vivid memories of hearing a band i completely could fall for loving them to bits. They were the first band i wanted to see so badly that i snuck out of my house to run off and see them at the Caps Center with my best friend my freshman year of High School. People forget what a visionary Michael Stipe is. This song should remind you. (*And yes, I did request them-how could i not?!)

Wilcow @ The Warsaw

cred
Last night marked the first time in a while that I truly wanted to be at two shows at once. With Wilco at the Warsaw and Ryan Adams at Hiro, I was partially torn on which show I wanted to attend...in the end I chose Wilco. Being how rare of an occasion this was and the time that went into procuring a ticket I just could not pass. In the end I think its safe to say I saw what will be one of the best Wilco shows I have seen yet and a definite top show of 2007. Wilco played for nearly 2 hours and 20 minutes and exemplified why they are one of the best bands in America. Beginning the show with 'Sunken Treasure' and closing with 'Outta Mind (Outta Site)' and also including such gems as 'Pot Kettle Black' and rare 'Hoodoo Voodoo' just made the show all the more special. Its safe to say that on their latest album Wilco somewhat abandoned their avant-garde style and chose one that showcases their pure instrumental skill. Particularly enjoyable are the ravenous guitar licks produced by Nels Kline which took center stage during last nights show. Overall it was a tremendous show which did not lack in energy for a single moment, leaving the 900 or so fans gathered in a complete sweat. Excellent!
