Beastie Boys collaborations...

I read about some interesting Beastie Boys news the other day and am finally getting around to sharing it. Riding on the tails of their instrumental album release, 'Mix Up' and scattered national tour dates it appears the threesome have begun working on a second version of the album-only this time we won't be hearing the familiar voices of Ad Rock, MCA and Mike D. Think M.I.A., Lily Allen (recently collaborated with Common on his most recent album) and Jarvis Cocker. BBoyz and Bgirlz style apparently.

B-Boyz and B-Girlz

So i almost died when i was 15. i went to see the Tebetian Freedom Concert at the lovely RFK stadium in DC with my best friend, Stephanie. We made it a point to be as close to the front of the stage as we possibly could for the act of the day (for us), The Beastie Boys. We were being completely girlie little girls, holding hands and singing along, which lasted all of, oh five seconds. The crowd, mostly boys, were alive with energy for the Beasties. I fell down so many times i lost count and still owe my life to a stranger named John with a british accent who took pity on me and warded of me being kicked in the face many a time. That set, to this day, remains one of the best shows i have ever seen. How could it not?! i grew up with each and every album and love this band and am so excited for the news i am about to share with you. Take your medicine because as they say...it's gonna be sick. "Beastie Boys have announced that they are going to release a new album this year. The album, which is yet untitled, will be the follow up to 2004's 'To The 5 Boroughs'. The band also announced they will play a series of instrumental-only shows, in a posting on www.Beastieboys.com
The band wrote:

"Hi... here's a few things you might wanna know about..

1. we have a new record coming out
2. it's gonna be sick
3. we're playing a bunch of shows this summer (see below)
4. they're gonna be sick
5. we're gonna play some instrumental only shows also
6. better call your doctor..cause they're gonna be sick
7. it's gonna be a gala event
8. we're changing up the website...sick
9. got new gear coming soon...again...sick..
10. go see a tailor and get tapered up..."

Listen all y'all it's a Sabotoge!

It is like being back in high school all over again with upcoming Bjork and Beastie Boys releases on the horizon. The Beasties have named their new album 'The Mix Up' which will hit stores in June. The best bit is Mike D has said that the style of the album will return to previous albums 'Check Your Head' and 'Paul's Boutique' instead of their recent sound on their 2004 release 'To The 5 Boroughs.' "We play instruments on the whole album, as opposed to sampling. There's more rock on there. If you know us you can trace the influences and they're no completely surprising. Someone who listens to us casually might think 'What the hell are these guys doing?' "It might make you flip your wig right off, or your hairpiece, if you're a casual listener."

Virgin Fest looking better this year

Being from Maryland I was a bit surprised when i heard the location of the new US Virgin Fest. I have always known and been envious of the other Virgin sponsered festivals in Australia, Canada, and England but was not sure how the DC/Maryland/Virginia area would take to this new addition to their summer festivities. But if there is anything we like more, it is a party- particularly one at a horse track. Bring it! Last years attendance was a bit slow and this year they will have some stiff competition from Lollapooloza, Bonnaroo, Coachella, and Sasquatch all with stellar line-ups.

Billboard reports that "Modest Mouse, Velvet Revolver, Wu-Tang Clan, Cheap Trick, The Fratellis, Amy Winehouse, Paolo Nutini, Crystal Method, 311, Incubus, Chris Cornell, Ben Harper and The Innocent Criminals, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV On The Radio, Bad Brains and Fountains Of Wayne to a bill that already includes the Police, Beastie Boys and the Smashing Pumpkins.

Completing the bill for the second-year festival, set for Aug. 4-5 at Pimlico Race Course, are Peter Bjorn and John, Sasha & John Digweed, Danny Tenaglia, LCD Soundsystem, Booka Shade, Shout Out Out Out Out, Matisyahu, Fiction Plane, Felix Da Housecat, Miguel Migs (Petal Pusher), Spoon, Deep Dish (Dubfire + Sharam), James Zabeila, M.I.A., CSS, Regina Spektor, Interpol, Infected Mushroom, Dieselboy & Andy C and Girl Talk.

"I feel like we came up with A-list talent from top to bottom, which was our goal," says Seth Hurwitz, producer of the festival through his I.M.P. "We've evolved to where the level of talent makes for two 'A-stages' instead of 'A' and 'B-stages.'

The lineup is assembled "from the top down," Hurwitz says. "We didn't approach the middle and bottom parts of the bill until we saw what was above it, then we proceeded with natural segues," he says. "Our desire was to have diversity without being directionless. It kind of reflects my personal taste: I like Patsy Cline and I like Metallica. Booking this, I try to pick the bands that are for real."

The Police are only playing one other festival in North America, Bonnaroo. But Hurwitz says that stellar booking did not stop him from booking the best bands available. "After we booked the Police, a lot of industry insiders were whispering in my ear, 'You've got the Police -- you've got a free pass this year, you should save your money," he says. "That would have made us more money this year but I look at it as an opportunity to spend money without feeling like we're taking as much risk because of this so-called 'free pass.' We're building a brand here."

Tickets, priced the same per-day as last year, go on sale May 5 as two-day passes at $175. Single-day tickets at $97.50 will only be available if the two-day tickets don't sell out."

Hopefully people will brave the ridiculous heat and humidity that is so so lovely in August in Maryland. Hey, i used to do it every year for Warped Tour, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right?

V Festival-USA LineUp Announcements

The Police and The Smashing Pumpkins are definitely back and hitting up the V Festival down in my lovely home state of Maryland along with the Beastie Boys on August 4th-5th. Unfortunately, this coincides with the Lollapaloozafestival in Chicago. Seth Hurwitz has high hopes that his festival will be able to attract fans despite the competition: "Given the choice of booking The Police or not we had to go for it. If anything it's probably helped us because we were able to book some bands that were out already for Lolla. Hopefully both festivals will be strong enough that it doesn't matter." Stay tuned for more announcements.

`~Happy Record Store Day`~

Many a holiday are being celebrated this weekend and heading into next week: Passover, Earth Day and well of course, celebrate your Local Record Store Holiday! For those of you lucky enough to have a local Mom and Pop record store i sincerely hope you show them some lovins because i think it goes without saying that they have weathered the storm to still be kickin' it. I was asked my boss over at KEXP to share a local record store memory if i could and it was sad because i honestly didn't have one i thought was worthy enough to share. Growing up in the suburbs of Washington DC/Maryland area all we had were Tower Records stores. The closest thing to a fond memory i have to share would have been waking up at 6 AM in high school to wait in line to procure my annual WHFS'tival ticket. (my favorite radio station that is now defunct...)I did not have a fancy, modern CD player until i was 15 and the first vinyl i ever purchased on my own was Beastie Boys, Hello Nasty. So, I welcome you to check out some hilarious and heartwarming stories here. Brooklynvegan outlined all of the free events, discounts and giveaways going on in nYc area so if you are around please check them out for me, you can use a handy map that the NYtimes put together for you (*12 is my spot!!).

Good news during 'Earth Week'

I hope everyone is as excited for Earth Day as i am! When i was a young lass my dad always made my sister and i stay outdoors all day helping him with various chores in the yard and getting some fresh air. I remember sitting on my bed listening to my beloved 99.1 WHFS while they were putting on a festival down in DC on the mall. I remember being so upset because we had not been allowed to go and at the time i was missing some of my favorite bands performing live. (i think REM was there- and at the time i was madly in love with Michael Stipe.) But times have changed and now every city seems to have its own way of celebrating our Earth, even if it is only for one day. Much has been made of Al Gore's Live Earth concert series and it seems that London is very close to selling out their engagement. "The London leg of Live Earth is already set to be a sell-out, as 203,000 people have registered to try and purchase tickets for the date at Wembley Stadium on July 7. With only 60,000 places actually available, acts already confirmed for the UK date include Madonna, Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Bloc Party." London is one of seven cities playing host to a concert. Hopefully the other shows fair just as well when it comes to attracting an audience and captivating everyone's attention (environmentally minded wise)! And as always, check Treehugger.com for new posts every day on how to GO GREEN.

Raconteurs and Hives Collaboration/ Gogol Bordello News

That Jack White, seems nothing can hold him down. The White Stripes album slated to be released in May, he is already back in the studio with fellow Raconteurs bandmates twelve songs deep into their follow up album to 'Broken Boy Soldiers.' Apparently he has also been working with Swedish band The Hives on a track for their upcoming album. Seriously Jack! Take it easy- we need you well rested for Madison Square Garden!

Earlier my office mates and i were sharing stories over which shows we had gone to see that kicked our butts in such a fashion that we would never forget. For me it was a tie between Rage Against the Machine and Beastie Boys whereas my friend Jori said Gogol Bordello was one of the roughest shows she had ever attended. I believe that! Eugene Hutz, Gogol's spastic stage antics certainly can rile up an audience into some violent action. The band is working on their fifth album as we speak which is being produced by Nick Cave and Victor Van Vugt. The album has been named 'Tarantella' which by definition is "an extreme form of traditional Italian music once played to women in need of treatment for hysteria" and seems to match the Gogol crew perfectly. In a recent interview with NME Eugene revealed the inspiration behind the title, "I stumbled onto the idea when I saw a painting in Italy. "It showed a woman having convulsions and a guy standing over her playing violin and I thought, 'That shit is SO us! It's more Gogol Bordello than Gogol Bordello!' But we called our album 'Super-Taranta' because it's not just a cure for women, it has the power to cure men too. It's unisex!" The Ukrainian-born singer also explained how the album had benefited from the fact that the collective have now finally cemented its eight-piece line-up with regular members. "The last album wasn't done with our classic line-up. Musically, we were still figuring things out back then but now, there's no need for any tricks in the studio," he explained. "The band is in great shape and our new bass player Tommy Gobena is helping us explore more dub sounds so now we're ready to take gypsy-punk to the next level." Songs confirmed for the new record - the follow-up to 2005's 'Gypsy Punks' - include 'Ultimate', 'Wonderlust King', 'Forces Of Victory' and 'Super Theory Of Super Everything' (which is also the album's subtitle)."
