Because your eyes are my get away ship

The Shackeltons keep good company with some of my favorite people (Taken by the talented Doron Gild)
I keep waiting for the band The Shackeltons to blow up. Especially here on the east coast for these five local lads from Chambersburg, PA. Their sound is infectious and loud while their live performances are packed with energy and exhibit many hours of devotion and practice. They have been paying their dues playing various dates across the country for the past year including visits to the city for CMJ and upcoming plans for this years SXSW. I have a feeling 2008 holds some very good things for them, since their music completely deserves some attention. Hopefully they will decide to come back to New York and add to the already lively looking Spring calendar. In the meantime my favorite blog, My Old Kentucky Blog highlights them today with two songs for you to discover and covet.

Longwave @ Mercury Lounge via KEXP

KEXP loves Longwave, Eagle Seagull, The Dead Trees, and my favorites The Shackeltons. So much so that they asked them all to come play for Friday's edition of Friction, held monthly at the Mercury Lounge. Whenever KEXP is involved you can expect a quality show and for those lucky enough have attended the stacked performance-that is exactly what we got. Reviews of the whole thing are over at the KEXP BLOG!!! so go check it out. Shelly did quite a lovely job with her review of Eagle Seagull, but it was her intimate and sophisticated write up of The Shackeltons that deserves the highest of praise. Or at least you showing up to attend their next performance. Or both.

Thursday and Friday-CMJ! Bands you *MUST* go see

And by MUST i mean *SHOULD* we are not about being pushy here folks, but these next two mornings/days/nights have some excellent talent packed into their wee hours. Starting off one of my favorite bands out of Pennsylvania, The Shackeltons, they are playing at Pianos tomorrow night at 9:00 PM. Their sets are packed with energy leaking out of every guitar riff and lyrics that shock you with brutal honesty and raw emotion. Check out what Sentimentalist Magazine has to say about them; "With an explosive urgency that thrives on neat, loud-soft-loud bursts of poetry and gritty chaos, singer Mark Redding performs both live and on record as if the words he’s spewing are thrusting out his demons. The drama almost cannot be contained. Think of the fun and hellfire of The Gun Club or Birthday Party, but with the tight finesse of Interpol and Fugazi, and you’ll begin to get the idea." They are on John in The Mornings' record label, Loveless Records-so if both of those bits of information combined to do not convince you- i don't know what will!

Next on the list is Black Kids at the Annex tonight at 10:00 PM or tomorrow during BrookylnVegans' showcase at Pianos at 4:45 PM. I cannot say how their show is live, but I am sure Jaime will take notes for those of us who won't be able to make it out!

The Epochs-talent like this comes along only once in well...an Epoch! Ohhhh!
I am very excited to tell you to check out The Epochs tonight. I was lucky enough to check both of these talented band earlier this week during their visits to KEXP, which you can go back and stream/podcast, review here. Lovely. The Epochs are just an incredible find for me this week. I wish there was more being made about them and Eagle Seagull, for i think both of those bands should have been on everyone's lips this week. I had heard of both of them before but really didn't take the time to check them out and well...they will both be on my list for the end of the year albums to check out, shows to check out...well you get the idea. BRILLIANT! You can check them out tonight at R Bar with Takka Takka (10:30 PM) and benzos (11:45 PM)- and The Epochs are closing out the night-this is gonna be a late one!

The Foals-the other band alluding to horses that you should check out
Next on the list besides Yeasayer (tomorrow-BV Party-Pianos), Islands (tomorrow-BV Party-Pianos), British Seapower (Tonight At Bowery Ballroom) is THE FOALS (they will also be LIVE on KEXP tomorrow at 4:00 PM). Just from listening to everyone talking about them it sounds like they are insane live. Again, you can check them at BrooklynVegan's showcase at Pianos on Saturday along with Tiny Masters of Today, The Maccabees and King Left.

After the Jump Festival!

After the Jump Festival is the dream baby of a collective of New York-based music bloggers, non-profits and local companies that come together for one day of music on the streets of Williamsburg and at events throughout the city. Tomorrow the madness ensues when some of my favorite artists The Antlers, The Shackeltons, and Pela take over North 6th street and turn it into a musical playground. Check out the schedule!

Bands to be excited about this week

The Maccabees and The Shackeltons!

First off, tomorrow The Maccabees
will be releasing their debut full-length album, 'Colour It In' and i highly recommend that you go out and pick it up. Not only do i love their infectious blend of lyrics ridden with heartbreak and adolescent lust but they have some of the most creative music videos out there right now. 'First Love' has been on heavy repeat in my office with 'X-Ray' following close behind. Shortly these UK lads will be teaming up with fellow Brits Bloc Party on their upcoming US tour as well as The Noisettes. Get there early and check them out!!! In case you cannot wait until tomorrow to check out the album visit Spinner who will is nice enough to have the whole album available for your streaming/listening pleasure.

Wednesday it is The Shackeltons! This band is fantastic live. How could they not be with the support of Loveless Records behind them? Hello! Definitely head down to The Annex to check them out! I am also excited to check out Bear Hands who are also on the bill and under the same management as The Rosewood Thieves.

New York- Meet The Shackeltons

If you do not have plans for tomorrow night (before going to see Albert Hammond Jr of course) then you have no other choice but to head on down to the Cake Shop to check out these lovely boys from Chambersburg, PA! They caught the attention of KEXP morning DJ- John and recently signed to his record label, Loveless Records. I am very excited to see how their energy transcends on stage- from what i have heard they sound like an infectious, rowdy bunch! They describe themselves in pretty creative terms on their myspace page, "The Shackeltons are dressed in uniforms once worn by men fighting wars with guns and grenades, but The Shackeltons are fighting a different battle. This battle is not to destroy, but to rebuild. Rebuild that which has been destroyed in everyone: hope, love, compassion, and optimism. "I'd rather see your soft heart then see your soft skin". "The robots purr like my favorite kittens and I'm forced to love them even though it's with you, who I'm smitten". Hmmm...well, guess we will have to investigate more to see exactly what that all meant, right?! RIGHT! See you tomorrow night!

Sigh---

*Via Brooklynvegan
Arcade Fire run in NYC finished. Bjork run in NYC finished. It is a bit like, what to write about now? According to Jaime last night was, "insane...the crowd was the most into it compared to any of the nights...the tunnels>power out>rebellion was insane....they had the whole entire place in absolute hysteria....i was tallking with todd and I have not see a crowd so into music like that since seeing Phish when they had epic jams....it was insane..." Yep, that about sums it up. After seeing a total of four arcade shows since last friday between the two of us i bet we are both feeling a bit of, what now?! At least i have The Shackeltons tonight! YEAH!
Now THAT'S HOT
