TAKKA TAKKA!!!! and the National

Don't forget that tonight at the South Street Seaport there is a pretty fantastic free show for everyone and anyone to check out. If the rain holds out (*fingers crossed*). Takka Takka are absolutely necessary to arrive early for. You do not want to miss them. Their music is perfect to head into your weekend and shake off all the stress you've been holding in. The National are still front runners on my list of favorite acts/albums for this year. Always flawless brilliant.

Siren Fest re-CAP

The Twilight Sad *cred*
I was incredibly satisfied with having to wake up 'early' on a Saturday morning to trek out to see The Twilight Sad five seconds into their performance. Yep-five seconds. Their enchanting songs were just as vivid and bold live. They had a bit of difficulty with their sound check which i worried would cause them to be tense and rushed on stage, but they were neither. Brazenly claiming their presence on stage they marked themselves as a band i think it definitely one to watch. I am hoping that some important music people checked them out for their sake. They deserve to be opening for bands such as The National, The Magic Numbers or The Editors with similar moody sounds and mysterious melodies. Granted, not really the type of music to turn out for on a bright, sunny July day, but overwhelmingly worth it.

Elvis Perkins
After The Twilight Sad set wrapped up i happily left Jaime to go watch one of my favorite acts, Elvis Perkins. The last time i saw Elvis he was opening for Cold War Kids at Bowery Ballroom where i completely fell in love. He clearly plans every second of his stagetime which shows in both his music and style. At first Elvis approaches the audience and commences with 'While You Were Sleeping' while the other members of his band gracefully join him one by one. Silently slipping into their places, putting down their beers and reuniting with their instruments. Elvis is a gift among the music scene these days. Like Andrew Birds and Antonymusic is more than just a format of expression for him but a true obstacle to tackle and meld into his own unique creation.

The Black Lips *cred*
I was sad to have skipped the Dr. Dog set as i have yet to see him perform. Jaime absolutely loves him and throughly enjoyed the performance. We took a bit of a break before heading over to check out the tail end of The Black Lips. This was the first band to make a convert out of me on Saturday. I enjoyed their fiesty energy as much as their sound. They were a perfect summer festival band and it was clear the audience was enjoying them.

My Lavendar Diamond *cred*
After leaving The Black Lips we wandered over to My Lavendar Diamond. She sounded lovely, but sadly, i felt she was a bit out of place with the whole beach, Siren Festival Vibe.

Matt and Kim *cred*
My favorite awakening of the day was during Matt and Kim. I had never really understood the buzz surrounding them and their live shows. Now i completely get it. Matt, with his exuberant voice comes across as the most jovial male performer i have ever seen. Whereas most male singers put energy into being either funny or mysterious, Matt with his youthful presence draws you in and fills you with happiness throughout their set. Their songs are lighthearted and the audience reponds with happy dancing, clapping and cheers. They were incredibly pleased to be performing to an audience at their favorite place on earth, Brooklyn and it showed. Tearing through each song i was very impressed overall. Definitely made me want to run home and put them on my ipod immediately.

I reallllllyyyy wanted to see M.I.A. but it was SO crowded by this time. It was very apparent that most of the crowd came out for the bands scheduled to close out the day. We couldn't hear her at all from where we were and all i could see was that she was wearing something sparkely. I really was curious to see how she translated live, hopefully i will have another chance soon-and hopefully i won't have to go to Studio B for it.

According to BrooklynVegan she was lovely. As lovely as Di Fara pizza? Tough competition since that is where i ended up due to getting pushed back from M.I.A. and i can officially say it is the best pizza i have ever tasted. The whole experience is something you must do while you are visiting or living in nYc. You will not be disappointed. Family run the owner gently makes the pizza right in front of you while you wait at the counter...salivating over every move. It is well worth the wait just to watch him create his magic. My favorite bit was how slowly and deliberately he moved and how respectful everyone was who were waiting for their slice or pies. A truly magical place. I highly recommend the red peppers that live in a white container on the counter and melt into the pizza as soon as you place them on top of the cheese. I must thank my friend Rebecca since she shared this grand bit of New York with me.

Night Two- Arcade Fire @ United Palace Theatre

Last Friday I went down to DC to see Arcade Fire play a damn fine show and the only thing I could keep thinking is my days of seeing this band in an intimate setting are over (I was seated pretty far back in a big auditorium). Before I continue, it must be pointed out that Arcade Fire is a band that truly wishes to be one with the audience...this element of their live show is exemplified repeatedly. Whether through Wins' invititations to the audience to get closer (even in the balcony) and or his eventual entrance into the crowd itself during numerous performances, it's as though Arcade Fire has achieved success but wants to remain tiny and to do this they ask of the audience to get closer in order to lose the big house feeling.

Last night they performed to a sold out crowd that was hungry with wanting any and every chance to get to be part of the "Arcade Fire Experience." I call their shows "An Experience" because they put more heart into their live performance than most bands out there right now. Once the night got underway with 'Keep The Car Running' the crowd slowly built up with energy that would carry them throughout the night. Arcade Fire played there standard setlist they have sticking with for much of this tour but they did throw in 'In The Backseat' which has only been played twice this entire year. Last night, much like most of the shows i have seen on this tour thus far, really culmintated when the band kicked into 'Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)' and 'Rebellion (Lies)'. I think everyone in the place was out of their seats practically losing it with music and singing every word at the top of their lungs!

As if that was not enough, after the band left the stage the whole crowd was humming the part of 'Rebellion' that you can hum (you know what I am talking about) until the band returned to the stage and Jeremy played the final drum beat. The band then ripped through a rockin' 'Intervention' until Win told the crowd, "that's it, come on stage." This began the rush and I ran as fast I could and to stake my spot on the stage for a finale of 'Wake Up' which consisted of everyone singing along and rocking out like no tomorrow. I am not gonna lie, i have seen hundreds of shows and this was hands down the greatest moment I have experienced at a live show. To look around and be literally feet from Richard and Regine and on the stage looking out at the crowd is an experience I will never forget. Amazing night and amazing time! Bring on Radio City! Viva Arcade Fire!

To curb my jealousy

"The good people at National Geographic are webcasting this Saturday's (June 28) concert with Bjork and Sigur Ros (to name a few) on their website from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. ET (begins at 8 p.m. BST/London or 7 p.m. GMT/Reykjavik).

National Geographic Music, will Webcast the open-air Náttúra concert live from Iceland on Saturday, June 28, 2008.

To be held in a large park near the center of Reykjavik, all of the performances will be during daylight, with Iceland’s capital city and dramatic rolling scenery providing a perfect backdrop to what is expected to be one of the biggest concerts the country has seen. The Náttúra concert looks to raise awareness of the impact of the growing aluminum smelting activity on Iceland’s natural landscape.

“One of National Geographic Music’s main goals is to offer artists and experts who care about global culture and the environment an outlet to create awareness for important issues. Spotlighting these amazing artists performing live in a spectacular backdrop allows our worldwide audience to enjoy great music and become aware of Iceland’s environmental concerns and join the conversation,” said David Beal, president of National Geographic Entertainment.

Not much chance for survival...if the Neon Bible is Right

Everyone loves Arcade Fire for more than just their music. There are always those descriptions of bands whose fans go on about how good the artists' music is along with the AND... That big AND that is the aspect setting the band you love apart from all others. Having seen Arcade Fire on Friday down in DC at DAR Constitution Hall and again last night up at United Palace Theatre the list of reasons for loving this band now includes their incredible live show. I will admit, i have not read many interviews with them- i guess a bit of me likes them to stay the mystical band that they are- i don't want to know all of their secrets. Both of their albums weave such richly taut stories that evoked so much emotion for me that i wouldn't want to find out something to make me change my mind. Growing up my dad fed our family musically with Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Woodie Guthrie, old labor union songs, and Simon and Garfunkel re-telling stories of his days of protests and college youth. Back in those days he said people used to sit around and listen to these artists because they were angry, because they wanted to feel something and be united- to become a community who wanted to make a difference. For me, this feeling comes across for the first time in my generation of music with Arcade Fire in such a way that it made me proud to tout the album about to my Dad. Which is saying a lot. Enough about me and why i love them- for it is their music that is deserving of the attention and this article.

Their live show is so unique because of this sense of community between every band member on stage. They are so in touch with each other even though it looks like a spastic theatrical performance. Regine with her robotic dance moves, Win climbing into the audience, Sarah playing violin like you wish everyone would, Jeremy pounding on the drums like he is working out some secret aggression, Will, Richard, Tim, Alexander...all switching up instruments between the tambourine, the bass, guitar, organ, anything and everything on stage.

These are artists- this is music. This is why people should buy records, pick up magazines, attend shows and share with their friends. This overwhelmingly talented band, this incredible sense of community. They are incredibly brave, every artist is in their own right- to get on stage and perform for us, especially us New York concert goers. But well, we all know the story of their beginnings, of the obsticales they had to overcome and then the words that they sing- that they have the courage to say. With this new album it is clear how they feel about this war, our war, how they feel about this country, how they feel about 'our' president and well- i always fall for that. So then you see them live and everyone is singing along and clapping and it makes you feel like this scene, this spirit must have been what it was like back in the 60's a bit- as much as anything could be nowadays. Messages of love, anger, hope- and they deliver it in a way that makes everyone in Canada proud to call this band theirs and gives everyone in America a huge reason to be jealous and a reason to cling to survival as a community-at least until another one of their albums comes out.

BrooklynVegan has some lovely shots of last night and a complete setlist as well as some selections from The National- who were EXCELLENT-definitely make it there early!
ProductshopNYC was there as well & at Beirut!

Not to be a downer...but what is WRONG with people....
NAIROBI (AFP) - Poachers have killed seven elephants near Kenya's Tsavo National Park over the past month, wildlife officials said Tuesday. The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) said the animals died in a migrating corridor near the Kenya-Tanzania border, where seven Tanzanian poachers and their Kenyan guide were arrested over the weekend. "Of the seven elephants, we recovered tusks for only two," Tsavo chief warden Julius Cheptei told AFP. Cheptei said the elephants were killed in the nearby Koranze ranch, which serves as a corridor for the animals when migrating from Tsavo to Tanzania's northeastern Mkomazi Game Reserve. "We suspect that the Tanzanians we arrested over the weekend are part of a syndicate that is notorious for poaching. But we have intensified security in the parks and along the corridors," he added. Poaching slashed Kenya's elephant population from nearly 50,000 in 1965 to about 10,600 in the early 1990s but conservation efforts and anti-poaching measures saw numbers inch back up to 30,000. The state-run KWS said most poachers in southwestern Kenya cross over from Tanzania, where they have nearly wiped out wildlife in Mkomazi Game Reserve. "These incursions could be a result of a lack of wildlife in many parts of Tanzania caused by abused licensed hunting," KWS spokesman Paul Udoto explained. Over the weekend, KWS increased surveillance in the country's animal sanctuaries after 214 of kilograms of zebra and wildebeest meat destined for Nairobi markets were impounded. Last month, the 171-nation Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) approved a landmark nine-year ban on international ivory trade to stem a surge in poaching that has killed up to 20,000 elephants per year.

Arcade Fire-2 shows-October-Maxwells??

*cred
Insanity! I double checked their website and didn't see any news of this. According to some of the people i have asked about this, they think it is about 10% true. We shall see. Of course there is the incredible news of the show at Red Rocks with LCD Soundsystem that was covered all over the blogs yesterday. I have always wanted to check out a show at Red Rocks-this is definitely a good occasion. So here is your rumour of the day:

"ARCADE FIRE ANNOUNCE SPECIAL INTIMATE SHOWS IN NEW JERSEY
Earlier today, the band announced two special intimate shows at Maxwell's in Hoboken, NJ on October 5 and October 6. These shows are not part of the national tour with LCD Soundsystem. Tickets for these shows are extremely limited and will be available at a limit of 2 per person starting Thursday, June 21 at 8 p.m. EDT on arcadefire.net. Remaining tickets will be made available on ticketweb and maxwellsnj.com on Friday, June 22 at 12 p.m. EDT. To protect our fans, tickets will not be mailed. There will be no physical tickets for either show. Patrons successfully completing orders will be required to produce photo identification and the credit/debit card used for purchase. An announcement regarding more dates for the national tour with LCD Soundsystem, including dates in the tri-state area, will be forthcoming." MusicSlut

Take Away Shows via La Blogotheque, c'est super cool!

"The Take Away Shows are a Video Podcast produced by the french weblog La Blogothèque. Every week, we give away a session, shot with a band, in an unusual, urban environment. Sessions are always filmed as a unique shot, without any cut, recorded live. We usually haven’t much time to record them, so the groups have to be spontaneous, to improvise, play with what they have with them, and with their environment, whether there’s a public or not. The Take Away Shows are produced by La Blogothèque, based on an original idea by Chryde and Vincent Moon. They are directed by Vincent Moon, and supported by Kidam, who lends us the cameras and shot some of the sessions. Our partner for the english version is the wonderful american site Daytrotter, who gives away twice week incredible audio sessions from the bands they love. Go and check their site!

*Andrew Bird-strolling the streets of Montmartre-it is absolutely beautiful, and my personal favorite. Other artists available as well, Cold War Kids, Tapes n' Tapes, The National, Arcade Fire, The Kooks, Grizzly Bear...all worth checking out. Who would you most want to see!? A little Jack White perhaps...

I made it through this year...

Even though at some points it was a wee bit hairy there. 2007 saw so much good music that i have literally been carrying around a list with me for the last two weeks and finally just decided to shove off and post it- even if i am still a bit weary of the order of things. There were SO many good albums and some of the ones left off are ones Jaime adores, so I made a list of picks he loved as well. I hope you all have been enjoying this festive holiday season with the ones you love and have been sharing~giving~ and writing lots of music with/for your friends and family. THANK YOU ALL for reading, taking songs, making comments, everything and anything for this blog. It was one of my New Years resolutions for the last year and it has brought me so much happiness. All of the bands i have written about hold a special place with me which is why i try to give them as much attention as i possibly can and you should too. I hope you all have a lovely safe, happy, healthy and MUSICAL NEW YEAR! So much love!

Did I tell you this boy is going somewhere?

I think i did! Opening spots for select Spoon dates, a spot at Lollapalooza and David Vandervelde is on fire. As well he should be. Not sure how both of his shows coming up this weekend did not sell out yet! Check out his greatful myspace posting:

"Hey There -

As we bring this April tour into the homestretch, wanted to take the opportunity to thank the incomparable Richard Swift and the Sons of National Freedom, who we've been touring with since the first week of March starting in the UK. Richard's new record, "Dressed Up for the Letdown," is one of my favorites of the year - you can check it out for yourself right here:
http://www.address0.com/sc/player/player.php?playlistid=478
We'll be playing our last shows with Richard for this tour this week - Philly, DC, Boston, then NYC - and from there, head straight into five shows with Spoon (NYC, Asbury Park, New Haven, Northampton, Boston). Get ready, because we can't wait!
Pitchfork I also wanted to pass along the news that we've been selected to play Lollapalooza this August in Chicago - something we're truly honored about. We can't wait to play Grant Park - should be a great time - and hope to see all you there! www.lollapalooza.com Finally, wanted to give some props to the folks at The Fader , who have been more than gracious to us, with a live hook-up down in Austin, TX, as well as a recent mention in their Issue #45 and inclusion in a pretty kick-ass podcast. That's it for now... stay tuned for some latebreaking news about July, August, and beyond, and thanks for all your support. Each and every one of you - on the road and in the clubs - has been truly gracious.

Have a great day, and see you soon.
David"

Daft Punk-at the movies?

Summer '07 officially tagged Summer of the ROBOTS!
Saturday i was awoken from my hybernation with a text message from Jaime exclaiming his happiness over the possibility of seeing Daft Punk again this friday...on Houston Street. Their second movie that is. Granted my head was still buzzing from Thursday night's show but i was still excited about the idea of strolling on down to my local movie theatre on Friday post The National and Takka Takka show to see what this 'Electroma' is all about. Then a question came to my mind- is it likely that we will hear some new material mixed in here and there? Even though their site claims none of the music featured in the movie will not be by Daft Punk. 'Electroma' can be viewed during two showtimes, one on Friday and once on Saturday-both at midnight. Tickets can be purchased here. It is certain to have a dark theme to it- if their video for 'Technologic' is any indication of their directorial creative streams of consciousness. In addition to the shows this weekend they have recently been added to Vegoose in Las Vegas. Now this is exciting. If you do venture to the Sin City for Halloween weekend you will also get to see my other dance love, Ghostland Observatory (i am sorry- i can't stop talking about how great they are!). As i already professed...seeing those two bands on the same day made me so overjoyed with music happiness-maybe you should start checking JetBlue fares now.

in 2009 we get new YEASAYER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*Yeasayer this past Saturday at Williamsburg Music Hall
I could not be awaiting an album with more anticipation than the new Yeasayer album. This past weekend I saw them at Williamsburg Music Hall in front of a sold out hometown audience almost exactly a year to the date from their sold out show at the Mercury Lounge. I was so in love with them back then that it is hard for me to break it down into exactly what has changed in the band or how it makes me feel but i know it is all a very good thing. They have taken their already beautiful songs and strong sets and taken to another level of being so smooth and seamless you would have thought they have about four or five albums and tours of experience behind them. Their show on Saturday found them as tight as I have ever seen them after fourteen months of various cities and venues. The intros into their songs were the longest they have ever lavished upon my ears and they seemed so happy to be home that their overwhelming joy was immediately contagious and spread across the crowd graciously gathered awaiting their every strum of their guitars and beat of their drums, bongos, cymbals, keyboard strokes...etc. It is going to be highly enjoyable to see where their next album takes them and I cannot wait for more tour dates to be announced once they have given themselves a bit of a rest. They are one of my favorite bands on the scene and for all of those people who say there is nothing like old music and records and there are no good bands I just cannot even listen to them whine anymore. With bands like Panda Bear, Yeasayer, Cat Power, The National, Magnetic Fields, Jessica Lea Mayfield, The Dodos, Arctic Monkeys, LCD Soundsystem, Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes and Hot Chip there is more talent than you can spend time listening to and I could not be happier for feeling this way every day.

Songs I annoyed my co-workers with this year

Today is not only the day of posting my end of the year lists, it is also my last day at a company where i learned so many important life lessons- one of which is how to blast KEXP as loud as possible and how to break people down enough to the point where they love what you do. HAppy (Harry Potter/Siren) WeeksSends

"The way we're describing it is a fruity vodka with a spicy kick, which is a way you could describe the city of New Orleans. TIM MURPHY-a spokesman on Absolut New Orleans vodka, a new drink flavored with mango and black pepper. Its profits will be used to help re-build the city." Hmm...not so sure how i feel about this. Maybe if our f'in government took some responsibility for our own people than Absolut wouldn't need to lure us to have another excuse to drink. Enough said.

So i know my postings today have been *w-E-a-K* to say the least, but hey, i am super ansy and on edge for my Harry Potter! I am. i will completely admit it. My angelic sister offered to buy a copy at the Borders in Maryland to assure that i will get a copy of the poster they are giving away since i am guessing it will be mass madness in the city tonight. Still...very excited. Hope everyone has a good weekend. So many good shows going on. Please make it out to Siren Festival. The latest from Aria C Jalali!

Suffering from the shock that it is September already?
The perfect solution is to go back through your music and find something that you discovered/rediscovered this summer than you L-o-v-e-d and pop that puppy in your headphones/ipoddy/computer and blast it if you are stuck indoors today like i am. I always find that i go the most stir crazy/cabin fever in September because the weather is just so perfect. Aria C Jalali was the first artist to share his music with me after i started blogging. I recieved my first official music submission from him and it was a beautiful seven inch crystal blue vinyl record. Could not have been more perfect. I was in love at once. Apparently the public radio station, KALW CORRECTLY announcing his name on the air had the same effect. Check out their podcast and his message of adoration below.
"KALW is a bunch of sweet hearts. i found this bad boy on google. It's a podcast from KALW, SF's National public radio. they talk about some local SF stuff, then at the very end of the broadcast play one of my songs, AND SAY MY NAME CORRECTLY! a radio first. (no im serious.)"- Aria C Jalali
