New Music Venue-YEAH BOWERY PRESENTS! and Justice dates/tickets

"Bowery Presents, an independent New York concert-promotion company, today announced Terminal 5 will open in early October and will be the largest midtown venue to open in more than ten years. Terminal 5 will be located at 610 West 56th Street between 11th and 12th Avenues, and will provide a new 3,000-capacity midtown music, art and event venue."

Tickets for The National (October 11th), M.I.A.(October 19th), Justice(October 20th), State Radio and Ween will go on sale Friday, August 17 at noon. Tickets for The Shins (October 23rd & 24th) will go on sale Saturday, August 18 at noon. Tickets can be purchased surcharge-free at the Mercury Lounge box office located at 217 E. Houston Street and beginning September 4 at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. Additional Terminal 5 shows will be announced in the coming weeks. (Decemberists November 1st & 2nd) Visit the Terminal 5 website for more shows to be announced soon. Yeah! I am hoping it is a lovely lovely room for music. After visiting Schubas and The Metro in Chicago i was rather jealous. We need a venue like the Metro here. Multi-leveled, easy to get to the front or sides, good site lines from almost anywhere and fantastic sound. Also excited to finally check out Justice LIVE!

I have an idea that you are here

Before CMJ week i ventured out to Studio B to check out my latest electronic love, Digitalism. First i must express my affection for Studio B. The first time i went was last year to check out Junior Boys. It was one of the worst concert/show experiences of my life. My friends and I couldn't find out way there in any sort of effective manner. We even stopped and asked for directions! By the time we got there we were thoroughly frozen and fed up. To  make matters worse, it wasn't the best show. I was disappointed with Junior Boys to say the least and swore I would never return to Studio B, unless the Yeah Yeah Yeahs (*yes- i know they did*) played there or someone of the caliber. I am stubborn like that. It was hard for us Manhattan folk to access and well, the sound needed some work. I am glad to report that I happily eat my words when I say Studio B is pretty darn fancy. I LOVED it for Digitalism. I felt like I was back in Europe. The DJs who were spinning their special mixes before and after were very fine indeed and everyone was dancing. It was a delight for the eyes to see hipsters in their element. I am a sucker for their flashy fashions but beyond that they danced! Digitalism were even better than their album. Chatting with the crowd and playing their hearts out they performed on every level...for an electronic set. The lasers, lights and smoke machines were all working over time. So much so that my friends and I had to change location...we are getting old and the smoke hurts our ancient lungs. I was sad I couldn't make it out for Justice's DJ set late night on Saturday. Maybe if I had it would have saved their performance at Terminal 5 for me, for I was not impressed. To say the least. My friends were- so maybe it was just my being exhausted and not loving the space. I LOVE their album, it is a fantastic record and definitely one of my favorites of the year. It just didn't do anything for me in person. I danced and had a good time, but I enjoyed Digitalism more. Hey, to each their own.

The hours could not fly by fast enough for me today. EEKkss! I was one lucky bird and saw both The Rapture and Daft Punk last Friday in Chicago and watched the masses shimmy to the ground. No literally-just you wait. It was up there with seeing The Knife or Goldfrapp for the first time. They are just pure fun. I cannot wait! In the meantime i am trying to unload the piles of work surrounding my desk and keeping myself in the mood with dancey music. One of my favorites right now are the new M.I.A. track 'Jimmy' off of her upcoming release, Kala. She samples a traditional Indian song which i highly recommend you checking out. Digitalism, Datarock, Matt and Kim, Mylo, Out Hud, and Justice also are good quick fixes. Only 7 and half more hours people! You ready?!

My new favorite band-Justice

Yes, yes, introducing the latest blog darlings, Justice!
Another french band blows us away with incredibly infectious dance anthems! I am surprised there wasn't more exposure of their latest appearance at the Coachella Festival, but then again they had a bit of tough competition. They remind me of Daft Punk, yes, but i like how Xavier de Rosnay and Gaspard Auge harkin back to 70's and 80's disco pop era. Keeping an excited lookout for dates in New York and you should too, they will go quickly! Until then- do the dance- DO THE DANCE!

Digitalism back on tour

While everyone was feasting on Justice I was enraptured with Digitalism- and unlike Justice they have never let me down. Theirs was one of the first shows I saw at Studio B and left sweat-soaked and satisfied. If you have not had a chance to catch them live then Sunday, September 14th is your night. This is their only New York show and it is sure to sell out so grab your tickets early at Other Music or here, tickets are $10, day of the show tickets will be $12 (if they are still available). Yes, yes...i know it is a Sunday night which i my little apartment means HBO happiness but thank goodness for the technological advances known as tevo or on-demand! Resident DJ's JDH and Dave P will also be slamming the dance floor with hits. If you have yet to check out Santos I highly recommend it. Extremely good sound and I really enjoy the energy of the staff and crowd. YEAH!

Harry Potter lures millions of Muggles

The fifth chapter of Harry Potter, Order of the Phoenix hit movie theatres world wide on Wednesday Morning at 12:00 AM. I saw people waiting in line when i was veturing out on my date with robots.

I was a bit sad because it was the first time i wasn't going to check out the latest Harry Potter flick at Midnight with all of my fellow Muggles. It appears that it still had quite the opening despite my absence. 12 million dollars to be exact. The Order of the Phoenix was such an amazing book and i sincerely hope the movie does it justice. With the likes of Helena Bonham Carter joining an already spledid cast i am sure it will. I am checking it out myself this weekend-so we shall see!

Working Poor

During my vacation I started reading The Fountainhead written by the prolific and visionary author Ayn Rand. Since I have had a hard time putting her pages to rest and find myself looking at everything differently. There is almost nothing like a good book, except for of course, good music. The Fountainhead touches on numerous social and philosophical issues, one of which was the working class conditions in New York in the early stages of my families' beginnings. Tenements squashed in the East Village that seeped with foreign languages, dedicated freedom seekers and devilishly hard working families trying to get by. These stories of hardship and heartbreak ran through the streets of the Lower East Side in turn influencing the likes of Bob Dylan and Lou Reed. Folk songs are so vital to our existence as a species that it allowed me to have a some what competitive discussion with my labor rights lawyer father as to why music is so important to me as a career choice. (He is dreadfully supportive--he is just also the biggest salt thrower I have ever met, but it keeps one incredibly honest having to constantly back up what you preach...) Tossing out the likes of David Vandervelde, Bonnie Prince Billy, Cat Power and one of my recent discoveries Horsefeathers I covered all my bases and left him somewhat convinced. Or at least charmed. Hailing from Portland, Oregon, Horsefeathers first captured attention after their release, Words Are Dead back in 2006. Justin Ringle, Peter Broderick, and Heather Broderick are the spirit of truth and justice and soothe as much of your social unrest that is possible these days to cure with armed with a banjo, violin and guitar. There must be something in the air for those Northwestern bands. Now if only we could mix that with a bit of New York stutter and vigour- what a scene that could be. There upcoming album, House With No Home is due out September 9th via Kill Rock Star records.

All the troubles in my mind they don't feel so bad

Thank you blog world! My discoveries led me to some of my favorite dance fests and tracks that i continuously revisit and lavish affection upon. Some of these bands you might recognize just a Little bit... LCD Soundsystem, Daft Punk, Crystal Castles, Simian Mobile Disco, Justice, Battles and Digitalism. I have been one very lucky little girl to have been able to see all of these bands perform their magic live and they definitely live up to the brilliance of their albums. Digitalism was by far one of my favorite discoveries. The french duo KILLED it at Studio B and i could not have been happier to find this treasure today amidst my blog hunting's. Love love love love it! Even with the lack of proper air conditioning it caused me to get up and take a break from work and do a little ditty. It was a sweaty scene, but it was totally worth it. Mars Volta at Terminal 5

The "beast" known as The Mars Volta came into nYc last night and completely blew the roof off of Terminal 5. The band whose sound some may classify as Progressive Rock, played through a non-stop set, kicking it all off around 8:20 until 10:55. The band layed down a show heavy with new material and I do not think there was soul in the place that was be dissapointed with the vision of things to come via their upcoming release. Even on the heels of the departure of original drummer Jon Theodore, who has been replaced by the equally talented Thomas Armon Pridgen the band sounded electric and fresh. The new material, as with their more well known catalogue, really reminded me of a combination of Led Zeppelin mixed with Santana (I am not saying they are as great as either of these bands, but this is one band that you can mention these bands and they do give great justice to the sounds both those artists pioneered...and no, The Mars Volta DOES NOT mimic those bands sounds but creates one that lends feelings of the forementioned acts).

If you have not experienced the duo made up of lead singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala and guitarist Omar Rodríguez-López you are truly missing out on some of the best live music out there right now. The only thing that can be said about this band is that their live show experience falls into two sides: either you love it or you hate it. It is easy to say from the scene of swaying bodies and dropped jaws that for those who showed up last night, The Mars Volta gave their audience all that they could asked for. Before I end this, the rest of the band is also equally deserving of praise. From the bombs being dropped on the bass the whole night, to the funky sound of the keys, to the rhythm guitarist perfectly complimenting Omar, to the percussion sides, to the ever so insane flute and horn player whose solos with Omar were impressive the nights' music was just one of those "experiences" that could have just gone on and on had the band not called it quits for the night.

On a final note, when their latest album The Bedlam In Goliath's drops on Tuesday, January 28th this is sure to be an album to not be passed on. Judging from the sounds of last night this album has the chance to win over new fans as the band seems to have pushed their limits and have created something that will sure have fans asking for more of The Mars Volta in 2008...I know I want some more and it has been less than 24 hours since the show.

NAIROBI (AFP) - Poachers have killed seven elephants near Kenya's Tsavo National Park over the past month, wildlife officials said Tuesday. The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) said the animals died in a migrating corridor near the Kenya-Tanzania border, where seven Tanzanian poachers and their Kenyan guide were arrested over the weekend. "Of the seven elephants, we recovered tusks for only two," Tsavo chief warden Julius Cheptei told AFP. Cheptei said the elephants were killed in the nearby Koranze ranch, which serves as a corridor for the animals when migrating from Tsavo to Tanzania's northeastern Mkomazi Game Reserve. "We suspect that the Tanzanians we arrested over the weekend are part of a syndicate that is notorious for poaching. But we have intensified security in the parks and along the corridors," he added. Poaching slashed Kenya's elephant population from nearly 50,000 in 1965 to about 10,600 in the early 1990s but conservation efforts and anti-poaching measures saw numbers inch back up to 30,000. The state-run KWS said most poachers in southwestern Kenya cross over from Tanzania, where they have nearly wiped out wildlife in Mkomazi Game Reserve. "These incursions could be a result of a lack of wildlife in many parts of Tanzania caused by abused licensed hunting," KWS spokesman Paul Udoto explained. Over the weekend, KWS increased surveillance in the country's animal sanctuaries after 214 of kilograms of zebra and wildebeest meat destined for Nairobi markets were impounded. Last month, the 171-nation Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) approved a landmark nine-year ban on international ivory trade to stem a surge in poaching that has killed up to 20,000 elephants per year.

I really would love to do every band that i saw perform justice so my postings might be coming bit by bit over the next few days. Louis La Roche is way ahead of you. He has been sitting in his bedroom mixing beats, searching for hidden those hidden gems and choosing samples all in preparation to sting your ears in 2009 when hopefully he will make his way across the pond towards us. Although he hails from the UK he is all the rave on the French underground pop music scene and has his parents contrasting music tastes to thank. There is something to be said about ruining your children's ears from the very beginning!

Hey Champ have been touring throughout the states opening in support for Lupe Fiasco who recently signed them to his record label, 1st and 15th. During CMJ their drummer Johnathan Marks gained affection amongst all the zillions of drummers to check out during the hectic week of music. Understandably so from this clip of their performance at Pianos. You can keep up with all of their happenings and even check out their top tracks from 2008 on their blog. Most impressive of all on their touring roster is their upcoming direct support to Justice on New Years Eve. Hopefully we will be hearing much more about these merrimakers and seeing some local tour dates sometime soon since if there was ONE thing 2008 lacked it was enough music to dance to!

There were many things i thought to myself over this past week/weekend that i spent on the futon watching MTV and recovering from the cold that wouldn't quit: i should really turn this off and read more from my latest Charles Frazier novel, damn i love that Kayne West sampled Daft Punk, i wonder if the MTV crowd even knows who Daft Punk is, i really hope Lily Allen wins Best New Artist, and my ever favorite question: why does MTV consistanly continue to play the artists i love as BACKGROUND music and intro music to their shows but don't play their videos, or videos at all when it comes down to it! Yet, i am continuously sucked back in. Especially when it comes to their award shows. My list of KEY items i enjoyed during this year's trashfest:

1. Oh watching Britney was just painful. Really- i was hiding behind my hands half the time. Ecks. Just bad. All over. Bad bad bad. Everyone they panned in the audience looked just as uncomfortable as i felt. It was worse than watching a car crash.
2. Love love love the stage this time around.
3. Yes Sarah Silverman, Amy Winehouse IS jewish.
4. Yeah Justin calling out MTV to play more videos!
5. Last year they picked The Raconteurs to be the in house band this year it is Mark Ronson. Maybe it would be nice if they again actually played these artists' music more often.
6. i don't know who this Chris Brown is-but he was definitely can dance. I would throughly enjoy a dance off between him and Justin Timberlake. Can they arrange that for next year?
7. YEah! it is the guys from Superbad!

Around and Away We Go

Tonight Twin Sister is playing with MemoryHouse and Oberhofer at the Mercury Lounge. I will admit, it has been a really long time since I have ventured out to see three bands I was curious about and it feels AMAZINGLY good. I am incredibly excited to check out Twin Sister. Their lush, lackadaisical, luring lullabies leave me incredibly nervous about whether they will be able to pull it off live. The xx does this sound justice and whereas I was completely musically fulfilled by their live set during CMJ many people have been arguing they are terribly boring live. There is nothing wrong with playing a perfect set without dancing around and having tons of lights and affects...but that is just me.

I have heard very good things about Oberhofer and am pretty sure the next time they play the Merc they will be headlining judging from the massive amounts of buzz surrounding them. Guessing they will be one of the bands to see during CMJ come October. My favorite track of theirs is "I Could Go." There are so many different elements all going on at once. Sounds like it could be simmered down Fuck Buttons in the background with the lyrics raging and tumbling around over top the frayed out guitar fuzz. All of this makes for a catchy track and a show that I hope to be a lot of fun. They are a local band which always makes me hope that they are really good because let's face it---Brooklyn is on fire right now.

Ghostland Observatory returns to nYc to play a show at Webster Hall during CMJ week. The day before Justice. Talk about a dance weekend. I love CMJ! Tickets are already onsale. So excited because well...i am incredibly enamoured with Aaron and Greg. After Sunday's performance at McCarren Pool i have a feeling a lot of other New Yorkers are too. How can you not love his moves!

OYA Festival

Nothing is as exciting as seeing the festival scene taking off across the globe. I just discovered OYA Festival while reading Audience Magazine and am shocked not to have heard about it before. The lineup for this year is already highly impressive and I am sure will continue to grow as the months creep closer. So far: Amulet, Amy Winehouse, BigBang, Bonde Do Role, CocoRosie, Gogol Bordello, The Hold Steady, Ida Marina, Justice, Lady Sovereign, Malajube, Matt and Kim, New Young Pony Club, Primal Scream, TTC and many more. The festival takes place for four days from the 7th-11th of August in a Medieval Park that is transformed into an arena for the performances. Apparently they have teamed up with Oh My Rockness and put together a showcase down at SXSW with The Lionheard Brothers, New Violators, Datarock, The Ponys, Ra Ra Riot, and Cloud Cult.
