Happy 50th Issue FADER

FADER is celebrating its' 50th issue with a rough, ghostly video of The Strokes shot by Colin Lane in 2001 in the midst of them becoming the darlings of New York. The piece that accompanies these first images of a band that changed music for me in every way is better written than anything i could ever attempt so check the whole bit out here. If you need a tasting to be convinced...
Squabbles and footnotes aside, in the pages of history books and The FADER, New York rock in the 21st century began with the Strokes. Of course the Strokes always evoked New York rock of the 20th Century, but that was kind of the point. The band captured the city’s borrowed nostalgia for a time when young men wore tight jackets and let their hair fall into their faces, then wrote thrilling songs about the dejected glamour such lifestyle decisions would lead to. At the time of their arrival, downtown Manhattan was still stuck in the orange plastic/white vinyl hangover of lounge culture, but the Strokes were a band for dark bars where the bathroom door was always broken and you could sink into a booth and hide out from adulthood for a few more years. They were a great band for New York because no one could agree on them: they were either the best or the worst thing that could have happened. People would tell you they hated them and everything they stood for, then a couple of beers later they’d confide that they’d never actually heard them or that they secretly loved them. They were one more part of the city you could endlessly kvetch about, then take pride in because no other city had anything nearly as good.

Albie Interview

Thank you gothamist! "Albert Hammond Jr., Musician, Stroke
Six years ago, whether you are ready to believe it or not, The Strokes emerged from a lost and muddled New York music scene and gave a kick start to the current indie rock phenomenon that we are experiencing today. The backbone of their sound and style was the rapid fire rhythm guitar of Albert Hammond Jr. Fast forward to 2007 and all of the emerging talents from the beginning of the century are all growing up and branching out. Modest Mouse found a sound that got them the #1 album in the US this week. Jack White sold out clubs around the world with three guys not named Meg. And Al Hammond is now touring to support a pretty darn good solo album, finding a balance that maintains the Strokes edge while forging a sound completely his own.

Albert took the time to answer a few of our questions, as he got ready to open two shows in New York for Bloc Party and headline one of his own at Bowery Ballroom.

Tell us your favorite (and why)...

I'm sorry that you would think that I would steal your fire

If i ever had any doubt in my heart of hearts about just how much i daily miss The Strokes then it became crystal clear to me during the Tribeca Film Festival/ASCAP Lounge while listening to Nickle Creeks' Chris Thile cover Heart Beats In It's Cage. The song has such range and strength and seeing it performed simply and cleverly by one musician made me fall in love with it all over again. Not that i could ever shake off or forget how much i dearly and deeply love everything and anything that Julian Casablancas has ever written but it brought it back to me with such a ping of sadness. Their last album did not receive the credit it justly deserved. I will always be proud and loving of what they tried to do. It was a break from Is This It and Room on Fire and the music world barely paused to notice. Just watching the video posted below should make one wake up and realize how fragile and weary-yet forceful and intelligent Julian is as a songwriter. Barely unveiling his feelings in interviews he comes across as being confident and cooler-than-thou but it is all a facade. As a fan I am happy to see his name in the headlines again making music, even if it is for a Converse Ad. Hey, Jules loves his Cons, you can't kick him for that. However, the song could have used a bit more work-especially since it has three talented artists contributing to the flow. Stereogum posted the whole bit here. Look out for the advertisement to hit your local MTV programming sometime soon (most likely). Then immediately run to your Strokes albums and remind yourself of what the rest of the music community seems to have forgotten- that yes, they are brilliant and for a bit they DID change music-especially in NYC. That-you can't ignore.

Despite my best ambitions...

There is something so incredibly delicious about swimming. One of my earliest memories was my first swimming lesson. The water was unbearably frigid and I did not enjoy it all. Screaming with tears streaming down my face I would not unleash my chubby arms from the neck of Pam, my beloved babysitter and unfortunate instructor. Once immersed and comfortable that was the end of the story for I became infatuated with the water from that day forward. Maybe it comes from growing up on a river that feeds into the majestic and unique Chesapeake Bay or maybe it was because as soon as it was warm enough I would ride my bike every day to our local watering hole and not return until it was dinnertime. My entire childhood was spent in, on or near the water and I was certain I would dedicate my education and adult life to preserving what was so beloved to my heart. Unfortunately I discovered New York and the reality of politics surrounding lobbying for environmental protection and have taken the weaker way out. But my love for the slickness and crispness of the waves and my respect for the creatures that call these places their home has never left me and never will. Floating in between that upper layer of sun-soaked surface wetness and the cool depths below you truly feel you are blessed for being a creature of our earth. The only sounds that penetrate your ears are the bits of coral crumbling under the hungry mouths of the fish feeding upon their jagged edges. Dark navy blue fins dotted with irridescent baby blue sparkels are my favorites to seek out. They hide under the large orange fans that drift with the waves, both coinciding peacefully as they have for ages. Yesterday afternoon while wadding out into the azure sea a little fish no longer than my pinkie took a liking to me and swam circles around my belly for a good thirty minutes. He would hide behind my back dodging my fingers that playfully chased him around the front and then hide again. To see if he really was interested in playing I took a couple of curious side strokes and he happily kept by my side. I decided to name him Claude. After my sister inquired, why Claude i responded with, 'because he is such a little flirt he must be french.' For you my dear little Claude I give you the lovely Jessica Lea Mayfield. This talented songstress has opened for both the Black Keys and the Avett Brothers on numerous occasions and has the lit of a skylark. At the tender age of 19 she recently was on the Black Keys last album, Attack and Release on the last track. Unfortunately I could only find one track to share with you, but I invite you to check her out. She is worth the gander.

Albert Hammond, Jr -second album details...

Cred
As much as I love Albert Hammond, Jr and his debut solo album that came out earlier this year, I was very sad to read the latest interview with him via Pitchfork. Sounds like it is going to be ages before we see a new Strokes album. I refuse to venture down the path of them breaking up despite the rumors and well... this interview does not really help us Strokes lovers to feel any small fragment of comfort. Details for Alberts' second solo release include a thirty second pop song and a lengthy eight minute experimental dip into the purely instrumental course of things. It clearly sounds like Albert is enjoying his adventure into writing and working things out his way. If this release is anything like Yours to Keep we are all in for another solid release. Song titles include:"Victory at Monterey", "GfC", "In My Room","Lisa","You Won't Be Fooled By This","Modern Jazz","Spooky Couch", "Bathroom Time", and "And So We Go". If you are curious for when it will be released: "So what's your next move? Getting the album out? When are you shooting for that, and what are your plans after that?"
Albert Hammond Jr: "Yeah. Pretty much, it takes three months. We'll be done January 8th. So, hopefully it comes out the end of March, April. Which would be spring. And then do the whole touring thing, which would be very exciting. Because between our four covers, the first album and second, we'd have 30 songs to play. Which means we can extend the set. I'm dying to go out and play these songs live, just because I'd love to mix them with the first album. To see how different they are would be really fun."

Strokes website, Albert on Conan O'Brien

I can't write about one of my favorite bands without writing about the other, that just would't be fair. So while you are missing The Strokes you can check out Albert Hammond Jr.'s first solo album. It is such a good album from start to finish and if you had any feelings of hesitation about the idea of Albert being without the rest of the gang, this should put your worries to rest. The best bit about this album is the obvious support surrounding his desire to venture out on his own and share his songs in a seperate arena with various tracks displaying guest spots by Julian Casablancas, Ben Kweller, Sean Lennon, Ryan Gentles and many more of his closest friends. If you aren't able to catch his show opening for Bloc Party this weekend or in April at Bowery Ballroom you can tune into Conan O'Brien on April 6th. In the meantime, get your fill of the ole' Strokes website while you can. Apparently they have decided to ditch the dear tele and will have a new format up sometime soon.

The Plasticines

While reading a recent issue of NYLON magazine I came across a highly interesting series where they chose different cities for their music scene and then picked a few bands that adequately represented the individual scene and flavor. Of course Paris was thrown in the mix which made me very excited because i love seeing french-speaking bands reach broader audiences than just francophone countries. The Parisians and The Plasticines in particular peaked my interest. The Plasticines are an all girl group that could easily gain the support of fans of Malajube, The Prototypes or Les Breastfeeders. After listening to their songs with their sharp rock edges and catchy pop lyrics it is easy to see where these girls draw their inspiration from, listing their musical influences as a mix of early punk (The Ramones, The Clash, Blondie) with modern rock (The Strokes, The Libertines, Yeah Yeah Yeahs). They sing some of their songs in english but most of them are in french and in their interview in NYLON they touched on the difficulty of singing songs in english to their french fans. The french are very protective and proud of their language so it is even more difficult for french bands to break the language barrier and reach English speaking audiences. Much like The Pipettes in spirit as a young girl group with easy to like pop lyrics and overflowing energy it is only a matter of time before The Plasticines breach America's shores.

Julian Casablancas STILL Wears Sunglasses At Night

***Photo taken by Dana Loftus***
Thank god for somethings always staying the same. As this past year ticked away I kept anxiously awaiting news of this supposedly upcoming Strokes record. The interviews with Julian came out and they were not always what I had hoped to hear...that the band wasn't writing together and other snarky comments added by various bloggers but at least they were back in action.
With a sprinkling of surprise London shows and this past weekend's performance at Lolla it is evident the band has been practicing and are still as they have always been, one heck of an awesome rock band. Things have drastically changed since the band last toured together in 2006. Bands such as Yeasayer, MGMT, Grizzly Bear, Suckers, Neon Indian, Fleet Foxes, Local Natives have taken over the indie rock headlines and then there is the whole internet/blog craze. Still The Strokes have weathered the storm. They continue to strike a soft spot in the hearts of many ever-so-fickle tastemakers hearts and they seemed to reign over their audience in Chicago....Lady Gaga armed with fireworks and all. Good music will ALWAYS be good music. This band always had that going for them. You can't fake talent, chemistry or hard work. Pitchfork's mini-review of their set says it all. Check it out here. Another avid fan wrote a review that made me remember what it felt like to see them live here.

Because Jews are like *snowflakes*

There were many things i thought to myself over this past week/weekend that i spent on the futon watching MTV and recovering from the cold that wouldn't quit: i should really turn this off and read more from my latest Charles Frazier novel, damn i love that Kayne West sampled Daft Punk, i wonder if the MTV crowd even knows who Daft Punk is, i really hope Lily Allen wins Best New Artist, and my ever favorite question: why does MTV consistanly continue to play the artists i love as BACKGROUND music and intro music to their shows but don't play their videos, or videos at all when it comes down to it! Yet, i am continuously sucked back in. Especially when it comes to their award shows. My list of KEY items i enjoyed during this year's trashfest:

1. Oh watching Britney was just painful. Really- i was hiding behind my hands half the time. Ecks. Just bad. All over. Bad bad bad. Everyone they panned in the audience looked just as uncomfortable as i felt. It was worse than watching a car crash.
2. Love love love the stage this time around.
3. Yes Sarah Silverman, Amy Winehouse IS jewish.
4. Yeah Justin calling out MTV to play more videos!
5. Last year they picked The Raconteurs to be the in house band this year it is Mark Ronson. Maybe it would be nice if they again actually played these artists' music more often.
6. i don't know who this Chris Brown is-but he was definitely can dance. I would throughly enjoy a dance off between him and Justin Timberlake. Can they arrange that for next year?
7. YEah! it is the guys from Superbad!
8. Alright so my friend Jess was right about the Plan White T's. People really do seem to like them.
9. Is that Justice i hear in the background?!
10. Justin asking for more videos AGAIN! i reaaallllly wish i had gone to see him at MSG.
11. Why were they only showing David Grohl on Rhapsody commericals?
12. YES! Shilah. No Strokes T-Shirt this time around? And bringing me news about the new Indiana Jones?! Lose the faux stach. please.
13. Is Linkin Park really a thrown together band like Spice Girls? I feel so much better about my outlandish distaste for their music.
14. WHITE STRIPES WHITE STRIPES win best group....ug. f'in Fall out Boy? Not surprised, just disappointed.
15. At this point i really just don't know what to do about my Justin infatuation (post white suit dancing and collaboration with Nelly Furtado and Timberland)
16. I thought Lily Allen was supposed to perform...

Shove your hope where it don't shine*

Since it is almost August i think it is safe to say that it is officially the summer of Santogold and Fleet Foxes. Since SXSW Santogold's stock has sky rocketed. While the rest of the country fretted over market crashes and rising gas prices she played Festivals, sold out shows and toured Europe. In the midst of all that she found time to collaborate with Diplo, The Strokes and celebrate the 100 year anniversary of Converse. Talk about working up a sweat. My other darlings, The Fleet Foxes have only coined everyone's flickr albums, facebook pages and blog titles describing just how much fun they are having during the longest days of the year (what a life i lead in the summer- i myself am guilty of this having used the lyric line as a tagline back in June). While perusing one of my favorite local photographers websites earlier this morning I see she too is a fan of those foxy fellas. One can only hope that these fresh faces stick around to provide us soundtracks for many a ete to come.

On Holiday

Not that anyone could say that Albert Hammond, Jr. is really on holiday. He has been touring since November in support of his solo album, Yours To Keep which has received well deserved love since its' debut. Of course there will always be comparisons to The Strokes and to Julian-but that was always expected. What has been a surprise for most people is how GOOD the songs actually are- how GOOD Albert's voice is- how TIGHT the live performances have been. The Strokes are either loved or hated but one thing stands on its' own and that is their work ethic. Albert definitely has carried on that standard through out this tour. Sold out dates, loving audiences, performances at South By Southwest, KEXP in studio sessions, numerous interviews with magazines and tv spots. If Albert did not deserve a holiday before he definitely does now! It was fitting that he should return to New York and play Bowery Ballroom as one of his last dates along his US Tour. While all of the interviews that i have read have centered around Albert alone his band was just as entertaining. The room was filled with familiar faces and friends for which Matt, Josh, Marc, Steve, Todd and Albert played a layed back yet spectacular set. It was clear everyone was enjoying themselves without missing a single note while throwing out hello's and jokes to all those gathered. It was really interesting to see how much of a feeling of a band came across from November during their CMJ show up until last night.

Extremely LOUD and Incredibly CLOSE...to you...

music is my beach house
I sadly realized tonight that my lil blog is over one year old and i completely missed her birthday! There have been many a day where i sought solace and comfort in my site-finding her to be the highlight of my day. Silly but true. I had often thought about starting my own blog but was always daunted by how many writers there already were on the scene and what would i have to say that would be any different than what anyone else was saying... It was not until I went to see Elvis Perkins for the first time and checked some of my favorite fellow concert goers pages and saw that NO ONE had written about my beloved. How could this be possible?! And so...i grew enough nerve and decided that it didn't matter if no one read it, or even if people did- i had artists i WANTED to write about and music i desperately wanted to share. It led me to places i never dreamed i could go-working with some of the best people in the business and i could not be happier for making the jump. Sometimes i bully Jaime into writing for me and every now and again my dearest sister reports in about the DC/Annapolis/Baltimore music scene when she isn't out and about saving the world, or at least trying to make it a better place. I truly with my whole entire heart believe that music unites, saves, inspires and creates love and every one's lives would be at a loss without it. In every single culture and even species there is some form of music. It makes our world a smaller and closer community and i think we could all use to remember that every now and again. So if you have enjoyed even the most minuscule of my ramblings i thank you.

In other news, Albert has been working hard touring across the United States and various European Summer Festivals. Apparently Albert has also been testing the screenplay waters with an adapted version of charles Bukowski's novel 'Pulp.' "It’s “an adult comedy—dark,” he explains. “It’s just real life.” Hammond has been working on the script for the past year and is currently shopping it to studios, though he doesn’t quite have the rights. Hammond says that Linda Bukowski, the widow, is shy of lawyers and gave Hammond the go-ahead to shop the script, agreeing to iron out a contract once a studio is onboard. Hammond knows the budget ($3 million max) and has a dream cast picked out: “I already have people in mind. I have it in my head—I could do it now.” (He declined to say who.) Though Hammond doesn’t expect to step behind the camera, he has no intention of being a hands-off screenwriter. “I wouldn’t want someone to ruin my script. I don’t think they’d let me direct, but I’d want to be somewhere in the picture like that.” (NY Magazine).

Also check out their new video by Warren Fu for "You Only Live Once."

Robots in Diguise...

I went to see Transformers last night and i cannot stop talking about how AWESOME it was. Really. One of the best summer movies i have ever seen. Pure fun. I laughed, i loved, i cried...well i didn't cry, but you get the general picture-it is that good. The Transformers themselves were sick. Michael Bay has completely earned my respect. I was a little cautious after the first trailer i saw and was worried one of my favorite childhood memories would be ruined and turned into a total cheese fest. Not to worry- even though the story is a bit of a reach the visual effects are so much fun to watch that i think i liked the movie better than the cartoon...maybe. Oh and this guy isn't so shabby either. Hey, what can i say, i am a sucker for boys in Strokes t-shirts who fight off evil robots.

Ski Brooklyn wrote a really entertaining review which i quite enjoyed and also offers up an mp3 of the Transformer TV theme song. Love.

in 2009 we get new YEASAYER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*Yeasayer this past Saturday at Williamsburg Music Hall
I could not be awaiting an album with more anticipation than the new Yeasayer album. This past weekend I saw them at Williamsburg Music Hall in front of a sold out hometown audience almost exactly a year to the date from their sold out show at the Mercury Lounge. I was so in love with them back then that it is hard for me to break it down into exactly what has changed in the band or how it makes me feel but i know it is all a very good thing. They have taken their already beautiful songs and strong sets and taken to another level of being so smooth and seamless you would have thought they have about four or five albums and tours of experience behind them. Their show on Saturday found them as tight as I have ever seen them after fourteen months of various cities and venues. The intros into their songs were the longest they have ever lavished upon my ears and they seemed so happy to be home that their overwhelming joy was immediately contagious and spread across the crowd graciously gathered awaiting their every strum of their guitars and beat of their drums, bongos, cymbals, keyboard strokes...etc. It is going to be highly enjoyable to see where their next album takes them and I cannot wait for more tour dates to be announced once they have given themselves a bit of a rest. They are one of my favorite bands on the scene and for all of those people who say there is nothing like old music and records and there are no good bands I just cannot even listen to them whine anymore. With bands like Panda Bear, Yeasayer, Cat Power, The National, Magnetic Fields, Jessica Lea Mayfield, The Dodos, Arctic Monkeys, LCD Soundsystem, Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes and Hot Chip there is more talent than you can spend time listening to and I could not be happier for feeling this way every day.

My Heart Beats in it's Cage

You'll want to turn these up
So yes, we are still awaiting new material from our beloved Strokes but in the meantime Albert has produced what is sure to be one of my favorite records of the year. From what I have heard so far it again showcases his ability to make the most beautiful melodies and his voice sounds stronger than ever. Honestly, could any of them ever do wrong by me...no, not likely. ¿Cómo Te Llama? will be released on July 8th via RCA records.

Oh man...

This is pretty damn exciting. For those of you who know Har Mar Superstar is to love him- admit it- you DO! Apparently 'Har Mar' aka Sean Tillmann has decided to dip his talented toes into the realm of television as well. Heck, it cannot be any worse than some of the stuff they have on MTV these days. (no i don't mean Human Giant- we love.) "Speaking to NME.COM, "I've been working on creating a couple of different TV shows over here" Tillman told us via phone from Los Angeles." I can't really say what because they're still in development. One is like a sitcom based on Har Mar and that's pretty much all I can say so far. The other is kind of a reality show but not really... I can't really talk about it because it's such an awesome idea that if someone takes it before we do I'll be really mad."
Sean has been busy touring around Australia with Strokes drummer Fabrizio Moretti as well as preparing his latest album, 'Family Trees' which hits shelves TODAY! "Sean Na Na is a band" says Tillmann,"I write all the songs and sing, and there's five of us onstage. We tend to get rowdy and drunk but I don't make out with as many girls when I play. That's the major difference." Meanwhile, in addition to his own music, Tillman has been contributing to other people's music too. "I just did this song called 'Trick For Treat' on the new Neon Neon album. It's Gruff Rhys and Boom Bip's new project, and is concept album about John DeLorean. Me and Spank Rock did the vocals on the first single from that album."
Now THAT'S HOT
