Johnny Borrell loves Solar Energy!
Not only is Johnny Borrell the lead singer of popular UK band-Razorlight but he recently took time out of his busy summer festival schedule to record a 'solar powered' song to support Friends Of The Earth. "'Funeral Blues' exists to highlight the solutions to climate change which exist, and which could flourish if the government introduces a strong climate change law.
The Big Ask campaign is calling for a law that will commit the UK to cutting its carbon dioxide emissions by at least three per cent every year. The track was recorded at The Premises in Hoxton, which is powered by 18 solar panels, and features just Borrell and a violinist. The track is being premiered on Radio 1 this afternoon, after which it will be available for free download for a limited period of two weeks from Friends Of The Earth ." (via NME)
Oh this French Band- Making the dreams of TEENAGE boys EveRy where come *true*
Teenagers! Seriously-what to do with them? Especially french Teenage boys from Paris! They write lyrics about how easy American girls are to snag*- how beautiful Scarlett Johanson is and throw around my least favorite word ever...'c**t.' Alas, the music lover in me looks past all of this and for good reason too. They are catchy and fun, perfect for those summer dance parties. Mix in a little Hadouken! add a dash of Cajun Dance Party, and finish it up with The Teenagers and you have an international lovefest! This triplette group has been friends since high school and have already been noticed by Vice Magazine who interviewed them a bit ago as experts on 'classy' hipster parisian fashion. Their album does not hit stateside until January of '08. Until then you can keep checking their myspace for more videos of french girls-oh come on boys-you know you will.

TV on the Radio take down FREE McCarren Park show from website
Accidental posting? Or is this really happening? Or maybe another killer show in their place? Either way it should be be noted that TV on the Radio had posted on their website as of yesterday afternoon that on Sunday July 29th they would be performing a FREE show at McCarren Park out in Williamsburg. They took it down but it was definitely up....

In other news, Albert has been working hard touring across the United States and various European Summer Festivals. Apparently Albert has also been testing the screenplay waters with an adapted version of charles Bukowski's novel 'Pulp.' "It’s “an adult comedy—dark,” he explains. “It’s just real life.” Hammond has been working on the script for the past year and is currently shopping it to studios, though he doesn’t quite have the rights. Hammond says that Linda Bukowski, the widow, is shy of lawyers and gave Hammond the go-ahead to shop the script, agreeing to iron out a contract once a studio is onboard. Hammond knows the budget ($3 million max) and has a dream cast picked out: “I already have people in mind. I have it in my head—I could do it now.” (He declined to say who.) Though Hammond doesn’t expect to step behind the camera, he has no intention of being a hands-off screenwriter. “I wouldn’t want someone to ruin my script. I don’t think they’d let me direct, but I’d want to be somewhere in the picture like that.” (NY Magazine).
Also check out their new video by Warren Fu for "You Only Live Once."
Must I dream and always see your face
"Music comes from a very primal, twisted place. When a person sings, their body, their mouth, their eyes, their words, their voice says all these unspeakable things that you really can't explain but that mean something anyway. People are completely transformed when they sing; people look like that when they sing or when they make love. But it's a weird thing--at the end of the night I feel strange, because I feel I've told everybody all my secrets."- Jeff Buckley
Say Anything Syndrome says it better than i ever could- on this, the tenth anniversary of Jeff Buckley's death.
"A gushing summary: Music bloggers in general are stereotyped as being obsessed with the new new NEW! with only the briefest backward glance at what's come before, but few new artists can hold a candle to Jeff Buckley in my eyes. An example of someone adept in all fields of musicianship -- his remarkable voice spanning four octaves (read more at the official Jeff Buckley FAQ), his guitar skills (which, unlike many, he only ever showed off if it was beneficial to the song -- few realise how incredibly skillful he was at guitar because of this), his interpreter's ability to transform the songs of others into his own (see the Sin-é sessions for proof), his lyrics ("My kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder... all my riches for her smiles when I slept so soft against her") -- his whole craft was impeccable. Thus, despite today being the 10th anniversary of Jeff Buckley's death, his music continues to live on and touch the hearts and minds of others.
The rest of his beautiful post is well worth the visit.

White Stripes review from Nashville
"After a nearly two-year hiatus, Jack and Meg White reunited at Nashville’s Cannery Ballroom May 18th for an intimate surprise gig. The sold-out show — which packed the 1,000-seat venue — was a practice run before the start of the Stripes’ summer tour. Donning classic White Stripes garb — Jack in a black T-shirt and red pants, Meg sporting a black and white polka dot dress — the duo delved into a flawless hour-and-a-half set without missing a step, making it all the more difficult to believe they hadn’t performed together publicly since December of 2005." Read the whole review here. (Rollingstone)
Frames singer Glen Hansard takes a spin at acting
Apparently it is not Glen's first go with this particular artistic medium. "Born in Dublin, Ireland in 1970, Glen Hansard is the lead singer, guitarist and a founding member of Irish rock group The Frames. He quit school at the age of 13 to begin busking on Dublin streets and gradually established himself as one of Irish music’s most popular and greatest talents. He first came to public attention as guitar player Outspan Foster in the Alan Parker film THE COMMITMENTS." 'Once' is "A modern day musical set on the streets of Dublin. Featuring Glen Hansard from the Irish band "The Frames," the film tells the story of a street musician and a Czech immigrant during an eventful week as they write, rehearse and record songs that reveal their unique love story." His love interest in the film is played by multi-instrumentalist Marketa Irglova. Marketa is only 19 and has been playing music since the age of seven. The two met while Glen was visiting Prague, Marketa's hometown. Just from the preview i can tell my sister is going to LoVE this movie since she adores The Frames to bits. Check out the trailer here.

For Shame...
When i saw this ad campaign yesterday it immediately made me nauseated. Who would think of such a thing? Really? These are four incredible ARTISTS- not people to be plastered with fake poofy clouds and Dr Martens to sell some stinky shoes. FOR SHAME! Worse off, it appears the brains behind the outfit, Saatchi & Saatchi did not even receive permission from Dr Martens...
"According to Boing Boing, Dr. Martens' parent company fired the ad agency. The concept was not approved and a press release from the shoe company stated, "Dr Martens did not commission the work as it runs counter to our current marketing activities based on FREEDM, which is dedicated to nurturing grass roots creativity and supporting emerging talent." The short of the long, Saatchi & Saatchi were fired." (Tripwire) So does this mean we won't have to see this plastered along a building on Houston Street? I hope so!

I love how serious Jack and Meg are about reaching every state and almost every White Stripes fan that they can during their upcoming tour to promote 'Icky Thump.' Most honorable. September takes them to eight more, with a few additional stops along the way. Don't worry Hawaii, Jack and Meg haven’t forgotten about you. *Also, Brandon Flowers, you trying to sound like Jack White, or just wishing you did?
"I am not a hipster and I am not trying to be. I believe there is nothing wrong with writing good songs, and I think that is what has been lost in all of this. People are either trying to be too cool or they are worried about just selling records."
-Brandon Flowers on today's music scene
Jack: "As far as America goes, my whole trip lately has been to get as far away from hipster culture as I can. I don't want to be cool to those kids." (August 2006)

Reporting in the Alphabet City via Adam Green
As if I really needed another reason to adore the fantastic being that is the Adam Green ...NME supplied me with an entertaining tale about a little bar in my neighborhood that recently opened and is operated by none other than 'singer' Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy. Because i am such an avid fan of this band i of course was so excited to see that Adam is too! Enough to even trek over to the 'dive' bar where drinks cost a mere $10.00-$12.00 for a cocktail, what a bargin! Plus everyone has to love a bar with a jukebox equipped with the soundtrack to the best movie ever, "Snakes on A Plane." But I will leave the reporting up to Adam. "There were so many Ashlee Simpsons that it proved difficult to identify the real one. Outside on the smoking bench I watched the paparazzi snapping pictures of Tommy Hilfiger and a "blonde woman" leaving. Back inside and I figured out that Ashlee was the girl in the grey dress continually making trips to the bathroom with her Fall Out Boyfriend. Honestly, I hoped they were snorting rails because at least it would make for a good story. When my girlfriend bailed at 12:30, I felt the urge to do drugs with Ashlee Simpson and introduce myself. She gave me a kiss on the cheek and turned to Pete, who looked morose. I backed off and sat down with Jay-Z and his buddies. It was only 1am but the party was clearing out. Jay-Z was the last big shot to leave, he was shaking hands so I put mine up and he gave me a high-five...An OK bar, but let's face it, I'm too old to be snorting rails with Ashlee."

White Stripes return to the stage- Nashville, TN
Friday night some very lucky White Stripes fans were lucky enough to see the duo's first live show since 2005. If Jaime and i could have-we would have been there. Luckily we have reports via NME.
"The White Stripes made their live return last night (May 18) at The Cannery Ballroom in Jack White's new hometown of Nashville, Tennessee. Announced less than 48 hours prior, the pre-tour show sold out in less than five minutes with fans ecstatic to see the duo perform for the first time since December 2005 - and the first time in Nashville since 2001. Without an introduction, The White Stripes quietly took the stage and quickly began with a cover of Hank Williams Sr's 'Tennessee Border', a fact not lost on the Tennessee crowd, who hooped and hollered their approval. As usual the entire stage was done up in red, white and black, a theme that went so far as to include the stage hands who wore black fedoras with red feathers - and even the lighting woman, who had dyed her hair red.
Meg White wore a black and white polka dot dress with a red and white polka dot scarf while Jack wore a plain black t-shirt with red trousers and had cut his hair in a way that recalled his looks on the cover of second album 'De Stijl', possibly in an homage to the band's tenth anniversary.
Before launching into the title track for their forthcoming album 'Icky Thump', Jack asked the crowd "How's my new hometown doing?" to an overwhelming response, but after that the duo got down to business, pounding their way through a set cherry picked from their five album back catalogue, as well as a few covers, including a crowd pleasing version of Dolly Parton's 'Jolene'. The band did showcase several new songs from the forthcoming 'Icky Thump' including the acoustic, country-leaning 'Effect And Cause' and the downbeat story song 'I'A a Martyr For My Love For You'. However the band had to struggle through some sound issues and an increasingly chatty crowd, which even saw the duo cut one new song, 'I'm Slowly Turning Into You', off after just one verse. After ending the set with 'Wasting My Time', a smiling Jack returned to the stage for the encore armed with a Polaroid camera which he pointed at Meg and then the crowd before launching into a headbanging version of 'Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground'.
The frontman then told the crowd, "We've heard from Hank and we've heard from Dolly", before adding "there's one more" the pair needed to cover in order to complete the Tennessee song cycle. They then launched into Loretta Lynn's Rated X', featuring Meg handling some off-key vocals, to the delight of the crowd. After that Jack announced "Now we've blessed our first show in Tennessee" before ending the show with a raucous version of 'Seven Nation Army'."
The White Stripes played:
'Tennessee Border'
'When I Hear My Name'
'Black Math'
'Do'
'Cause And Effect'
'Jolene'
'Death Letter/Motherless Children'
'Hotel Yorba'
'I'm A Martyr For My Love For You'
'Cannon/John The Revelator'
'Ball And Biscuit'
'I'm Slowly Turning Into You'
'We're Going To Be Friends'
'Apple Blossom'
'Wasting My Time'

***REview from Tremble Under Boom Lights
My fave bit: "But Meg was the biggest surprise...usually when they're jamming on some spontaneous riff she can be found to take most of her cues from Jack. But at this show Meg was running with it...throwing in accents and tempo changes in these off-the-cuff jams that occasionally turn into something. This development will be huge. Once they've been on the road for a bit and fully regained their sea legs, the White Stripes live show will easily be at its most ferocious ever." AHhh! so excited for July 24th!!!*******

After that Jack announced "Now we've blessed our first show in Tennessee" before ending the show with a raucous version of 'Seven Nation Army'."
The White Stripes played:
'Tennessee Border'
'When I Hear My Name'
'Black Math'
'Do'
'Cause And Effect'
'Jolene'
'Death Letter/Motherless Children'
'Hotel Yorba'
'I'm A Martyr For My Love For You'
'Cannon/John The Revelator'
'Ball And Biscuit'
'I'm Slowly Turning Into You'
'We're Going To Be Friends'
'Apple Blossom'
'Wasting My Time'

***REview from Tremble Under Boom Lights
My fave bit: "But Meg was the biggest surprise...usually when they're jamming on some spontaneous riff she can be found to take most of her cues from Jack. But at this show Meg was running with it...throwing in accents and tempo changes in these off-the-cuff jams that occasionally turn into something. This development will be huge. Once they've been on the road for a bit and fully regained their sea legs, the White Stripes live show will easily be at its most ferocious ever." AHhh! so excited for July 24th!!!*******

Things Jaime Loves-The Twilight Sad
Ahem! It would seem that Jaime cannot stop listening to the lovely sounds of The Twilight Sad so it is my duty to bring some of their music to you for this long rainy weekend we have coming up. Their sound is so alluring and haunting it is the perfect company for a grey weekend- in a good way. For those of you who missed their April engagement at the Knitting Factory you should check out their following tour dates in neighboring cities and think about making some travel arrangements...or writing some very loving myspace messages to convince them to return to NYC!

Ex-Concretes Singer-Victoria Bergsman Solo Release
I really enjoyed Victoria's band the Concretes with her sparkling voice lending an mysterious yet playful element to the music. When i first saw Peter, Bjorn and John at the Mercury Lounge they invited Victoria to accompany them on their hit track, 'Young Folks' which features Bergsmans' vocals on the album as well. She was endearing and polite, thanking the band and audience members for their support and cheers. It seems she has a new project underway, her first solo effort, Taken By Trees. A US date has yet to be announced. The album is being released in throughout Europe and the UK on June 18th via Rough Trade Records. Peter, Bjorn and John's John Bjorn Ytlling and John Eriksson are guests on the album as well as Electrelane's Verity Susman, providing piano arrangements and backup vocals. Not only does Eriksson help out musically but also co-produced the album. Should make for an interesting listen!

Adam Green (ex-Moldy Peaches), Albert Hammond Jr, The Pierces, Members Of The Mooney Suzuki, Tracy Bonham and more will create the Rolling Thunder Reborn band in honor of the 'ol crooner." Oh Jason Schwartzman
Is there anything he can't do? After all, he is a Coppola. He stars in my favorite movie of all time, he has made some pretty decent ones since that debut, he was in the band that i miss the most, and now it seems he is back to his musical roots with his latest creative project, Coconut Records. From what i have heard it would make a good tour mate with Albert Hammond, Jr. They both have clever lyrics backed up by music that is easy to listen to and addictive to the ear. I will admit, a bit of me wishes he would someday re-unite with fellow Phantom Planet members, but in the meantime i will keep an eye out for future Coconut Records dates, hopefully he will visit the east coast sometime soon. Until then, you can find his music via Young Baby Records.

*Obscure Sound has listened to the whole bit and gave an excellent overall feel for the album.
Yeah DC and MArylAnd!
I am so excited about the music scene that is happening all around my beloved lil home. Nothing makes me happier than listening to a new band only to find out they hail from an area that i am so proud to call home and influenced my musical tastes growning up. (rest in peace WHFS! Long live WRNR!) Being the girl who was made fun of all through out college for my hometown love- now the rest of the country has a few reasons to sit down and take notice, besides all of the muck that goes on surrounding the White House. Dan Deacon is blowing up the blogs these past few weeks, Beach House have found great success touring with the likes of Grizzly Bear, and recently Le Loup was signed to Sub Pop's Hardly Art. Le Loup have a sound that could easily be loved by broad audiences who are fans of Sufijan Stevens, Grizzly Bear, or Lonely Dear. All good things! Who is next? Maybe The Thrushes, Jukebox the Ghost?
*Le Loup play Washington, DC's Rock and Roll Hotel, alongside the Rosebuds and Bowerbirds, on May 22.
*Jukebox the Ghost will hit NYC in September 7th & 14th at Pianos @ 9:00 PM after an extensive run in London this summer.

I had always heard that !!! were something to see live and last night i finally had my chance. After LCD Soundsystem on monday night and Arctic Monkeys on tuesday night a band would have to be pretty darn exciting to get me to jump around three nights in a row and well- i don't think any other show could have been more fit for the job than !!!. I must confess, i had quite a bit of difficulty concentrating on dancing while watching what was happening on stage. Nic Offer and John Pugh chimed in with vocals and dance moves that were like a competition between Napoleon Dynamite and Will Ferrelll.

Meanwhile Jerry Fuch (drums), Allan Wilson (percussion, synth, saxaphone), Mario Andreoni (guitar), Tyler Pope (guitar), Justin Van Der Volgen (bass) and Dan Gorman (percussion & synth), fused together jam beats and rock energy whipping the crowd of hippies and hipsters into a frenzy. It was clear that this crazy crew was enjoying themselves just as much as the audience. Highlights included Shananana of Durty Nanas who has joined them for this tour and can definitely hold her own on stage with eight crazied boys-even if that means stage diving onto an unfortunate hipster. Now- you know what i would LOVE to see- the Klaxons and !!!- what do you think Bowery Presents? Maybe?!
MusicSlut and BrooklynVegan were there as well.

And the White Stripes madness begins!

OH NASHVILLE! The White Stripes certainly love you! They made you their home during the recording of their upcoming album, 'Icky Thump' and are one of the headliners for your lovely Bonnaroo festival and as if that was not enough, they are playing their first gig since 2005 for you as well! The White Stripes have announced that they will play an intimate show in Nashville, Tennessee this Friday-May 18th at the Cannery Ballroom, tickets will be through their website via the pre-sale link only starting TOMORROW at NOON (CST) with a two ticket limit per person (open to fans 18 and older). GOOD LUCK!
If You Were There, Beware
There are two sides of the fence with the Arctic Monkeys: You love em' or you think they make stupid generic pop music. As for me, I fall on the side of the fence that loves em'. Having first seen them at the Bowery Ballroom, I remember talking with Alex post show and being like, "this is the last time an ordinary guy like myself can just sit next to you without you being mobbed." There was something about them that night that when you left the Bowery, you knew these boys would be hitting it big time on this side of the pond. Low and behold they made it to Webster (which they f'n rocked) and then Roseland (which I was told rocked but was at Radiohead...sorry there few, if any bands i give up Radiohead for).
Then there was the question can these guys put out another album as solid as their debut and guess what-they did. 'Favourite Worst Nightmare' maintains the sounds of the previous release but puts the bands maturity on display, expanding their musical skills and range. As per live shows, last night marked the first time I have seen them since Webster and was stoked and curious, "Do these guys have what it takes to make Hammerstein rock as hard as the last two shows I saw from them?" And while I can't say the whole crowd was as rowdy as the past (no soccer chants), I can safely say, they did bring the heat and those that were into it loved it!
These guys are years ahead of bands their age and are so tight. They did a couple of tracks that really segued into one another excellently and overall, it just can't be said better, they are tight. It's obvious they practice and take their music seriously and that all comes across during their live show. If you have not seen them live, I beg you to as I think that is the fairest way to judge them. As productshopnyc.com points out, don't be shocked if they are headlining MSG soon.
